Why Vivi Took Over
Vivi Ornitier is a three-mana Izzet wizard doing three jobs at once. Every noncreature spell you cast puts a +1/+1 counter on Vivi and deals 1 damage to each opponent. Once per turn, Vivi taps for free to add mana equal to its power in any mix of {U} and {R}.
The loop: cast spells → Vivi grows → Vivi makes more mana → cast more spells → Vivi pings harder. The commander is the ramp, the payoff, and the win condition in one card. Most spellslinger commanders give you one of those three. Vivi gives you all three on a body that costs three mana and starts paying off the turn it lands.
The reason this primer exists: Vivi rewards correct sequencing more than almost any commander at this power level. Play your spells in the wrong order and you leave mana and damage on the table. Play them right and a single turn can deal 10+ to every opponent without warning.
The Engine, Turn by Turn
Turns 1-2: develop mana. Lead on a cantrip into a rock. Any Talisman or Signet gets you to Vivi a turn early, and every extra turn the engine is running compounds.
Turn 3: deploy Vivi. Don't dump your hand the same turn. Cast Vivi, hold up a cantrip or an interaction spell, and let it eat removal if the table wants to spend one. Vivi will draw removal. Better it trades for a counterspell you held than for your whole turn.
Turn 4+: chain. Open with a cheap cantrip to grow Vivi by one and tick the ping, then tap Vivi for its now-larger mana to fund the next spell. Each cantrip refills your hand and increases Vivi's mana for the rest of the turn. Storm-Kiln Artist turns each of those cantrips into a Treasure, so the chain accelerates instead of fizzling.
The kill turn: with Harmonic Prodigy and Guttersnipe out, every spell is two counters and several points to each opponent. Four or five cheap spells closes the game.
The Payoffs That Matter
Harmonic Prodigy is the single most important non-commander card in the deck. It doubles Vivi's magecraft-style trigger: every spell becomes two counters and two pings to each opponent. It doubles other Wizard and Shaman triggers too. It's a multiplier on your entire board.
Storm-Kiln Artist is the mana engine. A Treasure per instant or sorcery means your chains grow instead of stalling. You end the turn with more mana than you started, which is how spellslinger turns spiral into kills.
Guttersnipe and Thermo-Alchemist are the damage floor. Guttersnipe deals 2 to each opponent per spell; Thermo-Alchemist pings and untaps every time you cast, stacking across a long turn.
Curiosity on Vivi is the best card-advantage piece most players overlook. Vivi grows every turn, so a Curiosity'd Vivi draws you cards on combat and fuels the engine simultaneously. Niv-Mizzet, Visionary does the same on a bigger, harder-to-ignore body.
Opening Hands & Mulligans
Keep hands with a mana source and a way to use it.
- Snap-keep: any rock + Vivi + a cantrip. Online turn 3 with gas.
- Keep: two-plus lands and two cantrips even without Vivi. You'll find it, and cantrips are never dead.
- Mulligan: all payoffs, no enablers: Guttersnipe plus Niv-Mizzet plus Thousand-Year Storm and nothing cheap to cast. Payoffs without fuel is a brick.
- Mulligan: zero or one mana source. Vivi can't function mana-screwed.
The rule: you want fuel over payoffs in your opener. One payoff plus four enablers wins. Four payoffs plus one enabler loses.
Matchups & Threats
- Graveyard and stax hate barely touches you. You dodge a whole category of interaction.
- Spot removal on Vivi is the real threat. Hold protection (Swan Song, Deflecting Swat) for your kill turn, not before. Vivi resets to base power when recast, but the engine pieces stay in play.
- Fast combo decks outpace you if you spend early turns setting up instead of holding interaction. Against them, Vivi is a control deck first: hold counters, ping them down, only go off when you can close.
- Wide aggro underestimates your life total at its peril. Your pings hit everyone. Racing often favors you. Cyclonic Rift is your reset button.
Common Mistakes
- Dumping your hand on turn 3. You telegraph the deck and walk into removal. Develop, hold interaction, go off when protected.
- Tapping Vivi for mana before casting your cantrips. Cast the cheap spells first to grow Vivi, then tap it. You get more mana that way, always.
- Treating it like a draw-go control deck. Vivi rewards casting. A steady stream of cheap spells with two payoffs out beats a hoarded hand waiting for the "perfect" turn.
- Skimping on rocks. The deck wants 8-10 mana sources beyond lands. Getting Vivi out a turn early is worth more than another payoff.
Budget vs Upgrade
The shell is cheap: cantrips, common pingers, and signets are mostly bulk. The upgrades are fast mana (Mana Crypt and above) and the premium doublers. Test the expensive pieces with proxies, confirm they change your games, then buy in.
