commander · Wyleth, Soul of Steel
Arm for Battle (CMR).
A Boros voltron-equipment deck led by Wyleth, Soul of Steel — stack equipment on Wyleth, draw cards for each attachment, and generate an unstoppable card advantage engine while one-shotting opponents with commander damage.
The Commanders
Arm for Battle is a Boros Commander deck that solves equipment's historical problem: the card disadvantage of spending multiple slots on equip effects. Wyleth, Soul of Steel turns that weakness into a strength by drawing a card for every Aura and equipment attached to him when he attacks. Stack six equipment on Wyleth and attack — you draw six cards. The deck plays fast, goldfishes hard, and wins through commander damage.
Wyleth, Soul of Steel costs {1}{R}{W}, is a 3/2 Human Warrior with trample, and draws you a card for each Aura and Equipment attached to him whenever he attacks. The draw engine is the key — Boros traditionally struggles with card advantage, and Wyleth turns the voltron strategy into the most card-efficient thing you can do. With even three or four equipment attached, Wyleth threatens 21 commander damage in a handful of swings while refueling your hand every combat. The deck wants Wyleth protected and equipped as early as turn four.
Key Cards
Sram, Senior Edificer
A second draw engine that makes every equipment spell draw a card when cast. Sram is the insurance policy — if Wyleth is answered, Sram keeps cards flowing while you rebuild. He also draws on Aura casts, so he fuels both halves of the deck. At two mana, Sram hits the board before Wyleth and guarantees at least one draw per equipment for the rest of the game. Experienced players will try to remove Sram immediately because letting him stick means the equipment player never runs out of gas.
Blackblade Reforged
The biggest single power boost in the deck. Blackblade adds +1/+1 for each land you control to the equipped creature. In Commander, where land counts reach 10+ by the mid game, Blackblade turns Wyleth into a 13/13 or larger attacker. Combined with the trample Wyleth already has, that's lethal damage through almost any blocker. The legendary equip cost — just {3} when attached to a legendary creature — makes it cost-efficient specifically with Wyleth as the target.
Tiana, Ship's Caretaker
The deck's protection against removal. Tiana returns any Aura or Equipment destroyed while she's on the battlefield to your hand at the beginning of the next end step. Board wipes and targeted removal become far less punishing with Tiana in play — opponents spend two removal spells (one on Tiana, one on the equipment) to accomplish what should require one. She keeps the equipment engine running through interaction and is the reason the deck can consistently recover from disruption.
Danitha Capashen, Paragon
Cost reduction on a body. Danitha is a 2/2 first strike, vigilance, lifelink for {3}{W} that makes Auras and Equipment cost {1} less to cast. In the early turns, she lets you deploy Wyleth and an equipment in the same turn — effectively giving you an extra mana. Her keyword suite also makes her a legitimate equip target when Wyleth is removed. The cost reduction stacks with other reducers, and by mid game Danitha can halve the cost of multiple equipment in the same turn.
Sword of the Animist
Ramp attached to Wyleth. Whenever the equipped creature attacks, you search your library for a basic land and put it onto the battlefield tapped. Boros lacks Green ramp, making Sword of the Animist essential for keeping up with ramp-heavy opponents. Each Wyleth attack triggers both the Sword's land search and Wyleth's draw ability, giving you a land plus extra cards every combat. It's not glamorous but it closes the resource gap between Boros and three-color decks remarkably well.
How to Play
Ramp and set up in the first two turns, then play Wyleth on turn three with at least one equipment ready to attach. The goal is to attack on turn four with Wyleth equipped and draw two or three cards. From there, use those cards to add more equipment and accelerate the clock. Protect Wyleth with Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots — they're in the deck and should be deployed immediately. Win through commander damage: with five or six equipment and Blackblade active, Wyleth threatens 21 damage in two attacks on a mid-range creature that grows quickly.
