commander · Otrimi, the Ever-Playful
Enhanced Evolution (C20).
A Sultai mutate deck led by Otrimi, the Ever-Playful — stack mutate abilities on a single creature to build an unstoppable monster, and when it dies, Otrimi brings it back to your hand to do it all over again.
The Commanders
Enhanced Evolution is a Sultai Commander deck built around Ikoria's mutate mechanic. Mutate lets you cast creature spells as a super-ability that merges with another creature you control — combining their stats and abilities into one unstoppable compound creature. Otrimi solves the inherent vulnerability of mutate by recursing your stacked creature from the graveyard directly to your hand whenever Otrimi deals combat damage.
Otrimi, the Ever-Playful costs {3}{B}{G}{U} and is a 6/6 Nightmare Beast. Mutate costs {1}{B}{G}{U}. Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, return target creature card with mutate from your graveyard to your hand. The recursion is the deck's core advantage — mutated stacks die to a single removal spell, but Otrimi ensures you get the best piece back immediately. Combine Otrimi with Zaxara, the Exemplary (who makes Hydra tokens when you cast X spells) and Cazur/Ukkima (a Partner pair focused on deathtouch and card draw) as your secondary commander options.
Key Cards
Auspicious Starrix
Free permanents from the top of your library. Whenever this creature mutates, exile the top six cards of your library and put any number of non-Aura permanent cards from among them onto the battlefield. Each time you add another mutate creature to the stack, Auspicious Starrix triggers again — six more cards, another batch of free permanents. A single creature with three mutated pieces on it can put twelve or more free permanents into play. This is the deck's snowball engine: each stack layer generates enough board presence to eventually win the game.
Brokkos, Apex of Forever
Recursion baked into a mutate card. Brokkos costs {2}{B}{G}{G} normally, but mutates from your graveyard for {1}{B}{G}{G}. When Otrimi returns a mutated creature to your hand, Brokkos can be cast directly from the graveyard on the very next turn without needing to go through your hand. Brokkos is a 6/6 with trample — stacked on any creature, it immediately adds 6 power, trample, and the ability to mutate itself back from the graveyard the next time the stack dies. Self-replacing removal target.
Zaxara, the Exemplary
The alternate game plan that bypasses the mutate weakness. Zaxara adds {G}{U}{B} when tapped and creates an X/X green Hydra token whenever you cast an X spell, where X is whatever you paid. In a Sultai deck with access to large X spells like Blue Sun's Zenith and Villainous Wealth, Zaxara makes the control game plan entirely different. Pay 10 into Villainous Wealth, get a 10/10 Hydra and steal 10 cards from an opponent. The X spells fuel both massive threats and card or value advantage simultaneously.
Nethroi, Apex of Death
Mass reanimation on a mutate trigger. Nethroi costs {3}{W}{B}{G} or mutates for {4}{W/B}{G}. Whenever this creature mutates, return any number of target creature cards with total power 10 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. Ten power sounds restrictive until you realize you can return ten 1/1s, or five 2/2s, or two 4/4s and two 1/1s. With Otrimi filling the graveyard with mutate creatures, Nethroi's trigger restores the entire graveyard's worth of creature resources in one activation. Each subsequent mutation trigger continues the recursion loop.
How to Play
The first three turns are ramp and setup. Get to five or six mana by turn four to cast Otrimi or your first heavy mutate creature. Stack mutates carefully — always put your most valuable ability generator (Auspicious Starrix or Nethroi) at the bottom of the stack so opponents must exile two cards to get rid of it permanently. Otrimi's combat damage trigger is essential: get Otrimi through at least once per turn cycle to recover from removal. The late game is an attrition war the mutate stack wins automatically — opponents eventually run out of removal while you keep reassembling from the graveyard with Otrimi and Brokkos.
