The Commander

Prossh, Skyraider of Kher
Prossh, Skyraider of Kher · Art by Svetlin Velinov

Power Hungry is Commander 2013's Jund sacrifice deck and Prossh is one of the most powerful commanders the 2013 set ever produced. When you cast Prossh, you create X 0/1 Kobold tokens where X equals the total mana spent on Prossh. The first cast at six mana creates six Kobolds. Sacrifice a Kobold and Prossh gets +1/+0 until end of turn — so sacrifice all six tokens and swing for a 12/4 flying dragon. More importantly, Prossh generates exponentially more tokens with each recast due to commander tax accumulating.

Prossh, Skyraider of Kher with Food Chain is one of the oldest infinite combos in Commander — exile Prossh to Food Chain for mana matching his power, spend that mana plus tokens to recast him, generate more tokens, repeat for infinite tokens and damage. The deck includes this combo alongside a full sacrifice-matters package that wins without it.

Key Cards

Food Chain
Art by Dave Dorman

Food Chain

Exile a creature you control: add X mana of any combination of colors to your mana pool where X equals the exiled creature's mana value plus one. This mana can only be spent to cast creature spells. Exile Prossh to Food Chain for seven mana (his six mana value plus one). Spend that mana plus the Kobold tokens' value to recast Prossh. He enters with more Kobolds. Exile him again for more mana. Each loop creates more tokens than the last, eventually generating infinite tokens and infinite triggers.

Impact Tremors
Art by Zack Stella

Impact Tremors

Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, each opponent takes one damage. One damage to each opponent per creature entering. When Prossh enters and generates six Kobolds, Impact Tremors triggers seven times — Prossh entering plus six tokens — for seven damage to each opponent. With Food Chain generating infinite creature entries, Impact Tremors delivers infinite damage to all opponents simultaneously. Without the combo, each Prossh cast and token flood still deals seven to twenty-one damage from triggers.

Skullclamp
Art by Chris Rahn

Skullclamp

Equip for one mana. Gives +1/-1. When the equipped creature dies, draw two cards. The 0/1 Kobold tokens die immediately when Skullclamp attaches to them due to the -1 toughness. In a deck that generates six tokens per Prossh cast, equipping Skullclamp to each token draws twelve cards for six mana. Sacrifice the tokens you don't need for cards and keep the ones you need for Prossh's power boost. Skullclamp converts the token flood into the card advantage the deck needs to find its combo pieces.

Ashnod's Altar
Art by Luca Zontini

Ashnod's Altar

Sacrifice a creature: add two colorless mana. In a deck with six free Kobold tokens per Prossh cast, Ashnod's Altar converts those tokens into twelve colorless mana per Prossh entry. That mana accelerates subsequent spells or contributes to Food Chain loops. Sacrifice tokens to power the deck rather than spend hand cards on mana rocks. Ashnod's Altar also accelerates the Food Chain combo when you're not exiling directly — generate additional mana by sacrificing tokens before exiling Prossh.

Zulaport Cutthroat
Art by Eric Deschamps

Zulaport Cutthroat

Whenever Zulaport Cutthroat or another creature you control dies, each opponent loses one life and you gain one life. In a deck that routinely sacrifices twelve or more tokens per turn cycle, Zulaport drains twelve life per opponent per turn and gains you twelve life simultaneously. The life swing from a single Prossh cast with Zulaport in play is twenty-four life between the drain and the gain. With Food Chain generating infinite token deaths, Zulaport drains opponents to zero and gains infinite life.

How to Play

Cast Prossh by turn six and immediately sacrifice the Kobolds to maximize his power for combat. The first Prossh cast generates six triggers for Impact Tremors and Zulaport Cutthroat — that's usually six to twelve damage to each opponent from entry alone. Skullclamp on the tokens draws cards while sacrificing, Ashnod's Altar generates acceleration, and the combo with Food Chain is available once you find it through the card draw. Against non-interactive pods, the Food Chain combo ends the game immediately when assembled. Against interactive pods, win through attrition — Prossh generates so many tokens per cast that the sacrifice payoffs accumulate lethal damage over three to four Prossh entries even without the infinite loop.
