commander · Dina, Essence Brewer
Witherbloom Pestilence (SOC).
A Golgari aristocrats deck led by Dina, Essence Brewer — sacrifice Pest tokens to draw cards and load counters onto your best creature, gain life through lifelink tokens, and drain opponents with Vito and lifegain payoffs.
The Commanders
Witherbloom Pestilence is a Golgari Commander deck built around aristocrats, lifegain, and Pest token generation. The deck generates a steady supply of 1/1 Pest tokens with lifelink, sacrifices them for value, and converts that life into counter payoffs and drain effects. Dina ties the sacrifice engine to a card draw trigger and a life-to-counters converter, making every death matter.
Dina, Essence Brewer costs {2}{B}{G} and is a 2/4 Dryad Druid. Whenever you sacrifice a creature for the first time each turn, draw a card. For {2}, tap and sacrifice a creature to put X +1/+1 counters on target creature, where X is the sacrificed creature's toughness, and gain X life. The sacrifice engine and lifegain run in parallel — sacrifice a Pest (1 toughness) to load 1 counter and gain 1 life, draw a card, and repeat. Sacrifice larger creatures for bigger counter payoffs. The deck's secondary commander is Gorma, the Gullet, who rewards sacrifice with more food tokens and additional lifegain payoffs.
Key Cards
Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose
The deck's primary drain engine and lifegain-to-damage converter. Whenever you gain life, each opponent loses that much life. In a deck that constantly generates Pest lifelink tokens and gains life from Dina's sacrifice ability, Vito turns passive life gain into multi-opponent drain. A single turn of attacking with four Pest tokens drains each opponent for 4 life while you gain 4. With Vito in play, Exquisite Blood (also in the deck) creates an infinite life gain and drain loop. Vito is the most dangerous card in the 75 and the primary target for removal.
Pest Rescuer
Passive lifegain amplification and Pest generation. Pest Rescuer is a static ability that increases every instance of lifegain you receive by 1 and creates a 1/1 Pest token with lifelink when a creature dies. Every death creates a new Pest, and every lifegain trigger becomes slightly larger. In a deck where creatures die regularly and lifegain triggers constantly, Pest Rescuer ensures the board never empties — deaths refill the board with fresh lifelink tokens that continue the lifegain chain for Vito.
Poison-Tip Archer
Passive drain on deaths. Whenever another creature dies, each opponent loses 1 life. In a game where you regularly sacrifice six to eight Pests per turn cycle, Poison-Tip Archer drains opponents for 6 to 8 life before combat even begins. The Archer requires no mana investment after it enters — it simply turns every sacrifice and every opponent's creature death into chip damage. Combined with Vito, the death of a single 1/1 Pest can deal 2+ life to each opponent simultaneously.
Essence Warden
Life gain on creature entries. Whenever any creature enters the battlefield, you gain 1 life. In a deck that generates waves of Pest tokens, Essence Warden triggers on every token entering. That life feeds Vito's drain and Dina's counter loading. In the late game when you're creating 10 or 20 Pests per turn, Essence Warden keeps your life total high as a resource while simultaneously triggering drain effects for each one. A one-mana creature that generates passive value for the entire game.
Exquisite Blood
The deck's infinite loop enabler. Whenever an opponent loses life, you gain that much life. Combined with Vito — who makes opponents lose life whenever you gain life — the two cards create an infinite loop: gain life, Vito drains opponents, Exquisite Blood triggers more life gain, Vito drains more, repeat until all opponents are at zero. The loop requires both cards in play and any life gain trigger to start. The deck includes enough redundant tutors and draw to assemble this combination consistently by turn eight or nine.
How to Play
Establish mana and play Dina by turn three. Spend the early turns generating Pest tokens — Blight Mound, Pest Rescuer, and the Witherbloom classroom spells all create them passively. Sacrifice one Pest per turn to Dina's free ability to draw a card and keep hand size up. Look for Vito in the mid game and protect him — he's the primary win condition. If Exquisite Blood shows up, hold it until Vito is already in play and resolve the pair. If the combo isn't available, close out with Poison-Tip Archer plus Vito passive draining each opponent for 20+ through a full sacrifice loop.
