Laser Prints Fast and Cheap. Sleeve the Cards.

Toner is cheap per page. Output is fast. Prints are dry the moment they exit. The one real weakness (toner cracking when a bare card flexes during shuffling) disappears the moment you sleeve. If you sleeve your cards and print in volume, laser is the right call.

What Actually Matters in a Proxy Laser

Feed path. The single most important spec. Heavy cardstock jams in standard bottom trays. The paper bends around a curve it can't handle. A rear or straight-through feed pulls thick stock through without that bend. If the printer doesn't have one, you're capped at lighter stock.

Toner cost-per-page. The sticker price is misleading. Run the cost-per-page math over a year. A printer at $130 with expensive toner often costs more in year two than a $180 printer with high-yield cartridges. Check the toner yield before you buy.

Auto-duplex. If you print card backs, built-in two-sided printing matters. Auto-duplex quality varies. The L8260 has a known registration offset. See our duplex alignment fix guide before relying on it.

Resolution. 4800×1200 dpi or equivalent keeps card text sharp. Below that it goes soft.

Color fidelity. Color lasers vary more than spec sheets suggest. Blues and greens are where cheap lasers break down. Test with a dark card and a saturated card, not just text.

Mono vs Color

Mono laser is cheap to run and handles text-legible playtest cards or black-bordered proxies you'll sleeve. It can't do card art. Color laser costs more up front and per page, but it's the only laser option for cards that look like cards. Most proxy printers want color.

Don't buy on sticker price. Run the toner cost-per-page math over a year. The cheap printer often costs more once consumables are factored in. Not sure whether laser is the right call for you? Our inkjet vs laser comparison breaks down when each technology wins.
