A Precon Is a Starting Point
Preconstructed decks are a fantastic chassis (a legal commander, a working manabase, and a theme) for forty bucks. But they're built to be fine against each other, not sharp. The good news: upgrading any precon comes down to the same handful of moves. Learn the framework once and you'll never need a set-specific guide again.
The Five Universal Swaps
Almost every precon wants the same categories improved. Hunt these down first:
- Cut the high-cost filler. Every precon has three or four splashy, overcosted cards that look cool and underperform. They're your first cuts, no hesitation.
- Add ramp. Precons are chronically short on acceleration. Sol Ring is usually already in; add Arcane Signet, a two-color Talisman or Signet, and a land-fetch like Cultivate.
- Add card draw. The other chronic shortage. A repeatable engine beats a one-shot every time, so find the best draw your colors offer.
- Sharpen removal. Swap clunky, conditional removal for clean answers: Swords to Plowshares, Beast Within, Generous Gift, a flexible counterspell.
- Fix the manabase. Cut a couple of taplands for untapped duals and utility lands. Boring. Biggest consistency gain per dollar in the whole deck.
Tiers So You Don't Overspend
- $20: the five swaps above with budget staples. Noticeably better, barely costs anything.
- $50: add a real draw engine and better color fixing.
- $100: premium fast mana and the deck's signature payoff.
The biggest improvement to most precons isn't a flashy bomb. It's ten more lands-that-do-things and two more draw spells. Consistency wins more games than power.
This Is Where Proxies Shine
You don't know which upgrades your pod actually needs until you play the deck. Proxy the whole upgrade list, run ten games, and let the games tell you what's dead weight and what's missing. Then buy only the cards you've proven you want. No speculative purchases.
Print an Upgrade Starter Kit
These universal upgrades improve nearly any precon. Paste, print, and test them:
1 Arcane Signet
1 Cultivate
1 Kodama's Reach
1 Swords to Plowshares
1 Beast Within
1 Generous Gift
1 Rhystic Study
1 Talisman of Dominance
1 Command Tower
1 Reliquary Tower
Slot those over the filler, play, and watch a $40 deck start punching well above its price.
