Past Clean and Correctly-Sized

Once basic proxies are under control, the next question is making them look special: full-art that runs to the edge, a foil sheen, a finish that reads as premium in hand. This is the experimental end of the hobby. Test before committing a whole deck.

Full-Art: Bleed and Trim

The prettiest proxies have art running off the card edge. Every home printer has an unprintable margin it can't reach. Print to the edge and you get a white border along one or more sides.

The fix is bleed and trim: print the art oversized so the image extends past the final card boundary, then cut into the art. The color runs off the edge because you trimmed through it. Source full-art and borderless printings. Scryfall flags them. Keep the art centered as you cut, and the white edge disappears.

Foil and Holo: What Actually Works

There's no true home foiling, but a few approaches get close:

  • Cold lamination with holographic film over a matte print gives a real rainbow shimmer. Most convincing method, most fiddly.
  • Printable foil or metallic cardstock under a light print lets the sheen show through. Hit or miss depending on art density.
  • Avoid hot lamination on toner: heat warps and cracks laser prints.

These look good in hand and in a sleeve. They're craft projects, not factory foils. Manage expectations accordingly.

Finishes That Close the Gap

The finish is the last 10% that decides whether a print reads as premium:

  • Matte laminate / matte sleeve kills the toner sheen that gives cheap prints away immediately
  • Gloss pops color but shows fingerprints and glare under overhead lighting. Use selectively
  • Texture sprays exist but are overkill for most setups; a good matte sleeve does 90% of the same work at no extra cost

The highest-impact premium upgrade is mechanical, not foil: kill the white edge with a clean bleed-trim, then hide the toner sheen behind a matte sleeve. Those two steps already put your proxies a tier above standard.

Practice Sheet

Rehearse the bleed-trim and finish on a few full-art cards before committing a deck:

Print oversized, trim into the art, sleeve in matte, compare to a real card. Once these look right, scale up.
