commander · The Fourth Doctor
Blast from the Past (WHO).
A Bant historic and artifact deck led by The Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith — investigate to generate Clue tokens, cast historic spells for bonus effects, and overwhelm opponents with artifact synergies.
The Commanders
Blast from the Past is a Bant Commander deck themed around the classic era of Doctor Who, covering the First through Eighth Doctors. The deck leverages the historic supertype — artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas — as the mechanical foundation, generating Clue tokens through investigation and converting those Clues into card advantage and board presence. It's a value-oriented midrange deck that rewards playing iconic characters from the show.
The Fourth Doctor is a Partner commander with Sarah Jane Smith. He has a triggered ability that fires whenever you sacrifice a Food or Clue token — you may put a historic card from the top four cards of your library into your hand and put the rest on the bottom in any order. He converts your investigation and Food production into a top-of-library tutor for exactly what you need next. With Sarah Jane generating Clues passively, the Fourth Doctor consistently digs through the deck.
Sarah Jane Smith is the second Partner. She's a 2/2 Human Detective that creates a Clue token whenever you cast a historic spell. Every legendary creature, artifact, or Saga you cast puts another Clue in play — which the Fourth Doctor can sacrifice to find the next historic card. The two Doctors form a tight loop: Sarah Jane creates Clues, the Fourth Doctor sacrifices Clues to find more historics, which creates more Clues.
Key Cards
The TARDIS
A legendary artifact Vehicle at the heart of the deck's theme. The TARDIS lets you exile the top card of your library with a time counter each time you investigate. When you cast a spell from exile, The TARDIS triggers cascade — you cascade off the spell's mana value. Combined with the constant Clue generation from Sarah Jane, The TARDIS turns investigations into a cascade chain that deploys additional cards for free each turn.
K-9, Mark I
A legendary artifact creature and iconic Doctor Who companion. K-9 has a triggered ability when he enters — investigate. He also has an activated ability to deal one damage to a target. He generates a Clue immediately and provides a Clue trigger for the Fourth Doctor's ability. As a legendary artifact, he triggers Sarah Jane's Clue generation just by being cast. He's efficient, thematic, and advances every part of the deck's engine.
Time Lord Regeneration
A three-mana instant that counters target spell that targets a creature you control. If that spell is countered this way, put a time counter on Time Lord Regeneration. You can remove three time counters from it to return target creature from your graveyard to the battlefield. This card protects your legendary Doctor characters from removal while building toward creature recursion. It keeps your commanders alive and provides a long-term value engine.
Swords to Plowshares
The most efficient white removal spell in Commander. Exile any creature for one mana. The deck runs the full premium removal suite because its primary win condition is value-based, not combo-based — you need clean answers to stay in the game while the engine assembles. Swords to Plowshares exiles commanders, indestructible creatures, and everything in between with zero restrictions.
Academy Manufactor
Whenever you create a Clue, Food, or Treasure token, create one of each of the other two types as well. In a deck that generates Clues constantly through Sarah Jane and investigation effects, Academy Manufactor triples every token into three. Each investigation creates a Clue, a Food, and a Treasure — exponentially more resources for the Fourth Doctor to sacrifice, more life gain, and more mana. This card turns the token engine from strong to overwhelming.
How to Play
Deploy Sarah Jane Smith early and cast historic spells to generate Clues each turn. Once the Fourth Doctor is online, sacrifice those Clues during your end step to dig for more historics. Get Academy Manufactor into play as soon as possible — it triples every investigation into three token types.
Win through card advantage snowballing out of control: The TARDIS cascades off every investigation exile, Sarah Jane generates Clues off every historic spell, and the Fourth Doctor converts Clues into exactly the cards you need. The deck builds toward a wide board of legendary permanents and artifacts while drawing multiple cards per turn. Close out with combat damage or a late-game cascade chain that deploys half your deck in one turn.
