commander · The Ur-Dragon
Draconic Domination (C17).
A five-color dragon tribal deck from Commander 2017, led by The Ur-Dragon, ramp into enormous dragons, free permanent drops on every attack, and a one-mana discount on every dragon spell from the command zone.
The Commander
Draconic Domination is the biggest deck in Commander 2017 and it makes no apologies for it. The Ur-Dragon has eminence, so all dragon spells cost one less from the moment it sits in your command zone. That discount applies before you ever pay the nine mana to cast it. When it finally lands, every dragon that attacks lets you put a permanent from your hand onto the battlefield for free. Hit three opponents with three dragons and you drop three permanents without paying mana.
The Ur-Dragon turns combat into a cascade of free permanents. In a five-color deck with access to every dragon ever printed, that attack trigger can end the game in one swing. The deck's job is to survive long enough to land it.
Key Cards
Ramos, Dragon Engine
Ramos grows faster than almost any other creature in the format. Each spell you cast adds charge counters based on its colors. In a five-color deck, most spells add five counters at once. Remove five counters and Ramos produces ten mana across all colors. One activation can pay for two additional dragons. With The Ur-Dragon's eminence cost reduction already active, Ramos accelerates the late game to a speed opponents struggle to match.
Kindred Discovery
Name Dragon and this enchantment draws a card every time a dragon enters the battlefield or attacks. In a deck casting three dragons a turn, Kindred Discovery replaces every card you spend almost immediately. Once The Ur-Dragon is online and dragons are attacking for free permanents, a single combat step draws three cards and drops three permanents. This card buries opponents in card advantage while the board becomes impossible to stop.
Scalelord Reckoner
Whenever any dragon you control is targeted by a spell or ability, you destroy any nondragon permanent an opponent controls. Target one of your dragons with removal? You destroy something of theirs in response. This card punishes targeted interaction so severely that opponents often stop pointing removal at your board entirely. In the late game, Scalelord Reckoner alone can lock opponents out of meaningful interaction.
Wasitora, Nekoru Queen
Wasitora has flying, trample, and a triggered ability: when combat damage gets through, the defending player sacrifices a creature. If they can't, you create a 3/3 flying Cat Dragon token. Against creature-heavy opponents she pressures their best blocker every turn. Against empty-board control players she generates a growing army of token dragons that keep feeding The Ur-Dragon's attack trigger.
O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami
A 6/6 flying trampler with a punishing trigger: whenever O-Kagachi deals combat damage to a player who attacked you since your last turn, you exile any nonland permanent they control. That makes for a real political deterrent: attacking you risks losing a key permanent in retaliation. In the late game with The Ur-Dragon's free permanent trigger running, O-Kagachi ends games while also keeping opponents off your back.
How to Play
Lean hard on the ramp package in the early turns. This deck needs five to seven mana to start playing its threats, and The Ur-Dragon's eminence discount only helps so much. Get the first dragon into play by turn four and start accumulating board presence. The deck runs enough five-color fixing to cast anything in hand, so prioritize whichever dragons cause the most board disruption. Once The Ur-Dragon hits play, set up one combat step with Kindred Discovery drawing cards off each attack and the free permanent trigger dropping the rest of your hand into play. Most opponents won't survive two such combat steps.
