The Commanders

Zaffai, Thunder Conductor
Zaffai, Thunder Conductor · Art by Dmitry Burmak

Prismari Performance is the Izzet spellslinger deck from Commander 2021, and it rewards you for casting the biggest instants and sorceries you can find. You cantrip early, build mana, then dump expensive spells that trigger a whole board of value. The deck wants a full graveyard, a stack of rituals, and a commander who turns every cast into a payoff.

Zaffai, Thunder Conductor does exactly that. Every time you cast or copy an instant or sorcery, you scry 1, so the deck never draws dead. If that spell has mana value 5 or greater, you make a 4/4 blue and red Elemental with it. If it has mana value 10 or greater, Zaffai deals 10 damage to a random opponent. Cast a five-drop and you get a body. Cast a ten-drop and someone loses a third of their life total on the spot. The deck is built to hit those breakpoints over and over.

Key Cards

Storm-Kiln Artist
Art by Manuel Castañón

Storm-Kiln Artist

Storm-Kiln Artist makes a Treasure every time you cast or copy an instant or sorcery, and it grows bigger for each artifact you control. Those Treasures pay for the next spell, which makes another Treasure, which pays for the one after that. Get a couple of cheap spells and a cost reducer online and the whole turn snowballs. This is the card that turns a hand of cantrips into a real mana engine.

Veyran, Voice of Duality
Art by Mathias Kollros

Veyran, Voice of Duality

Veyran doubles the triggered abilities you get from casting or copying instants and sorceries. With Zaffai out, that means two scrys per spell and two Elementals off your five-drops. Storm-Kiln Artist makes two Treasures instead of one. Veyran also grows every time you cast a spell, so it quietly becomes a threat while it doubles your whole engine.

Talrand, Sky Summoner
Art by Svetlin Velinov

Talrand, Sky Summoner

Talrand turns your spells into a flying army. Every instant or sorcery you cast makes a 2/2 Drake, no mana value requirement attached. That gives the deck a plan that does not depend on Zaffai surviving: cast your cheap cantrips and counters, build a wall of fliers, and swing in the air. Talrand and Zaffai together mean a lot of tokens hitting the board off the same spells.

Pyromancer's Goggles
Art by Kevin Sidharta

Pyromancer's Goggles

The Goggles tap for red, and when you spend that mana on a red instant or sorcery, you copy the spell. A copy counts as casting for Zaffai, so you scry again and can make a second Elemental off the same card. Point it at a burn spell or a big red sorcery and you get two for the price of one. It also plays nicely with the deck's rituals since the copy is free value on top of the original.

Sunbird's Invocation
Art by Christine Choi

Sunbird's Invocation

Whenever you cast a spell from your hand, Sunbird's Invocation reveals cards equal to that spell's mana value and lets you cast one of them for free. Cast a big sorcery and you dig deep, then get a second spell on top of it. Each free cast is another Zaffai trigger, another scry, and possibly another Elemental. This is the payoff that makes casting expensive spells feel cheap.

Apex of Power
Art by Svetlin Velinov

Apex of Power

Apex of Power is the ten-drop the whole deck is pointing at. It exiles seven cards and lets you cast them this turn, and if you cast it from hand it refunds ten mana of one color so you can keep going. Because its mana value is 10, casting it fires Zaffai's big trigger and deals 10 damage to a random opponent. One Apex often chains into a game-ending turn on its own.

How to Play

Start by leaning on cheap cantrips like Ponder and Serum Visions to smooth your draws and get a signet or two down. You want Zaffai on the board by the mid game so every spell after that pays you back with a scry and a body. Build toward your rituals and cost reducers, then cast the expensive spells the deck is packed with to flood the board with 4/4 Elementals. Your fastest kills come from hitting the mana value 10 line with cards like Apex of Power, since Zaffai throws 10 damage at a random opponent each time. Protect your engine pieces, hold up a counter when you can, and let the spells do the rest.
