commander · Captain N'ghathrod
Mind Flayarrrs (CLB).
A Dimir mill and horror tribal deck led by Captain N'ghathrod, mill opponents into nothing, steal their creatures as they fall into graveyards, and win through an army of horror creatures and stolen threats.
The Commanders
Mind Flayarrrs is a Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate deck built around milling opponents and taking their best creatures once those creatures hit the graveyard. Captain N'ghathrod mills every player when horrors attack, then hands you the best creature out of each milled graveyard. The deck gets stronger as opponents' libraries shrink, and it wins with their own cards.
Captain N'ghathrod is the mill-and-steal commander. When horrors you control deal combat damage to a player, that player mills cards equal to the damage, and at the beginning of your end step you may put one creature milled this way onto the battlefield under your control. Every turn you connect with horror damage, you pull the best creature out of each opponent's graveyard. Against decks full of powerful creatures, N'ghathrod basically plays their deck for them.
Zellix, Sanity Flayer is the Background partner alternative, making Horror tokens as opponents get milled. Zellix plays off N'ghathrod's mill triggers and gives you a steady supply of blockers and attackers. Run Zellix as a Background alongside a creature commander when you want to push Horror production on top of the mill plan.
Key Cards
Consuming Aberration
Consuming Aberration gets +1/+1 for each card in each opponent's graveyard. In the mid-game, with three opponents milled to 15 cards each, it is a 45/45. Whenever you cast a spell, each opponent also mills until they reveal a land, which is often three to five cards a spell. So it mills hard on its own while growing into the biggest creature on the table. It is N'ghathrod's best horror attacker and the card that ends games fastest once the milling gets going.
Brainstealer Dragon
Brainstealer Dragon exiles the top card of each opponent's library at the beginning of your upkeep, and you may cast those cards. Every upkeep you get to play out of their decks: their ramp, their removal, their win conditions. Against high-powered decks running expensive bombs, Brainstealer Dragon lifts their best spells before they can cast them. It also feeds the mill plan by chewing through libraries from the top while everything else eats them from the bottom.
Umbris, Fear Manifest
Umbris gets +1/+1 for each card exiled from your opponents' hands or libraries, and whenever Umbris deals combat damage to a player, you exile the top X cards of their library where X is Umbris's power. A few exiles make it a 5/5; a few more and it is hitting for 10 or better, exiling that many cards each connection. The bigger Umbris gets, the more you exile per hit, and the more you exile, the bigger it gets. That loop makes Umbris one of the scariest attackers in the deck.
Mind Flayer
The D&D creature that sums up the deck's whole theft plan. When Mind Flayer enters, gain control of a creature an opponent controls for as long as Mind Flayer sticks around. N'ghathrod steals out of graveyards and Brainstealer Dragon lifts cards off the top of libraries, and Mind Flayer just takes creatures straight off opponents' boards. With three different ways to steal, opponents' best creatures rarely stay theirs for long.
Zellix, Sanity Flayer
Zellix makes a 2/2 Horror token whenever any player mills one or more creatures. This deck mills constantly, off N'ghathrod attacks, Consuming Aberration spells, and Brainstealer Dragon upkeeps, so every creature that gets milled hands you a Horror. Ten creatures milled across three opponents in a turn is ten tokens. Run as a Background partner, Zellix backs up N'ghathrod directly, bolting token production onto the mill payoffs for a wider board.
How to Play
Spend the first three turns setting up mana and dropping small horrors. Get Captain N'ghathrod down by turn four and attack with horrors every turn after that. The mill-and-steal engine kicks in right away: mill your opponents, take their best creature at end of turn, use it next turn. The snowball is quick, because each stolen creature mills more, feeds Consuming Aberration, and adds to your Horror count for Zellix. You win by burying the table under a board built entirely from their own cards, or by riding Consuming Aberration once it grows past anything they can block as libraries drop into the double digits.
