Coven Counters (MID).
A Selesnya coven and +1/+1 counters deck from Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, led by Leinore, Autumn Sovereign — maintain three creatures of different powers to trigger coven and draw cards while growing your Human army one counter at a time.
The Commander
Coven Counters is the Selesnya precon from Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and it runs one of the most rewarding engines in the format for players who like board development. Leinore triggers at the start of combat each turn — she puts a +1/+1 counter on a creature and draws a card if you control three or more creatures with different powers. Maintaining coven (three different powers) is the engine. Since counters change power, the deck constantly reconfigures its board to keep coven active while growing every creature.
Leinore, Autumn Sovereign is deceptively powerful. The counter placement at the start of combat means you're essentially distributing free +1/+1 counters every turn, and the card draw triggers consistently once the board is established. The deck runs a heavy Human tribal package — Kyler, Sigardian Emissary as an alternate commander, plus humans that reward counting creatures of the right power.
Key Cards
Kyler, Sigardian Emissary
Kyler gets a +1/+1 counter whenever another Human enters the battlefield under your control. At end of turn, he puts a +1/+1 counter on every other Human you control equal to the number of counters on him. This is a full-board Human lord that compounds — the more Humans you play, the bigger Kyler gets, and the bigger Kyler gets, the more counters every Human gets per turn. Use him as an alternative commander for a more aggressive Human-focused build.
Champion of Lambholt
Champion of Lambholt gets a +1/+1 counter whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control. Creatures you control can't be blocked by creatures with less power than her. A Champion with three or four counters means your 1/1 tokens can't be blocked by anything with power three or less — which is most small creatures opponents use to chump. In a token-heavy midrange deck, Champion of Lambholt converts numbers into evasion and makes combat math impossible for opponents.
Verdurous Gearhulk
An 8/8 trample artifact creature that enters and distributes four +1/+1 counters among any number of target creatures you control. In a coven deck, four counters spread across different creatures immediately reconfigures your power distribution to maintain or trigger coven. Gearhulk itself as an 8/8 satisfies one power threshold, and the four distributed counters change four other creatures' powers simultaneously. This is the deck's best single-card board state reset.
Gyre Sage
Evolve gives Gyre Sage a +1/+1 counter whenever a creature with greater power enters under your control. Each counter Gyre Sage accumulates adds one green mana when you tap her. In a deck constantly growing its board, Gyre Sage evolves quickly and becomes a significant mana engine. A four-counter Gyre Sage taps for four green mana, effectively doubling your available mana for large spells.
Sigarda, Font of Blessings
A four-mana 4/4 with hexproof that gives all Humans you control hexproof and lets you look at the top card of your library whenever a Human enters the battlefield. Sigarda protects your entire Human team from targeted removal while filtering your draws each time you play a new Human. Against removal-heavy pods, Sigarda makes the whole Human army effectively uncounterable and unkillable without board wipes.
How to Play
Build a wide board of Humans early and start working toward coven by maintaining three creatures with different powers. Leinore triggers at the start of combat — use that combat step counter to shift a creature's power and trigger coven draw. The deck snowballs when Champion of Lambholt is on board: keep making creatures, keep pumping her, and eventually nothing can block your team. Mid-game, Gyre Sage or green ramp spells get Verdurous Gearhulk into play to reconfigure power distributions and maintain coven. Win through wide attacks with evasion from Champion of Lambholt, or close with a fully pumped Kyler team where every Human has accumulated six or seven counters.
