commander · Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver
Undead Unleashed (MID).
A Dimir zombie tribal deck from Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, led by Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver — generate decayed tokens when zombies die, sacrifice them to draw cards, and flood the board faster than opponents can clear it.
The Commander
Undead Unleashed is the zombie precon from Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Wilhelt runs one of the smoothest self-sustaining engines in Commander. When a zombie you control dies without decayed, you create a 2/2 zombie token with decayed. At the beginning of your end step, you can sacrifice a zombie to draw a card. The loop is elegant: your non-decayed zombies die, create decayed tokens, those tokens sacrifice for card draw, and the cycle repeats every turn cycle.
Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver turns death into tokens and tokens into cards without requiring any additional setup. Against board wipes, you recover immediately — each zombie that dies without decayed creates a replacement token. The deck runs The Scarab God as an alternate commander for a grindier recursive strategy, and Gisa and Geralf for a cast-from-graveyard angle.
Key Cards
Rooftop Storm
You may pay zero instead of paying the mana cost of zombie spells. In a zombie deck, this turns your six and seven-mana threats into free casts. Undead Unleashed runs high-impact zombies that are usually too expensive to chain — with Rooftop Storm out, you cast every zombie in your hand in one turn. Combined with Wilhelt generating tokens, one explosive Rooftop Storm turn can create ten or fifteen zombies, each triggering any "zombie enters" payoffs you control.
Diregraf Colossus
Diregraf Colossus enters with a +1/+1 counter for each zombie card in your graveyard. Whenever you cast a zombie spell, create a 2/2 zombie token. In a deck that fills its graveyard with zombies through normal attrition, Diregraf Colossus arrives as a six or seven power creature in the mid-game. Every subsequent zombie cast produces a free token, effectively doubling your zombie count every turn while Colossus keeps growing.
Endless Ranks of the Dead
At the beginning of your upkeep, create X 2/2 zombie tokens where X is half the number of zombies you control, rounded down. In a deck that naturally scales to twelve to fifteen zombies, that's six or seven free tokens every turn just from this enchantment. Wilhelt's sacrifice trigger at end of step plus Endless Ranks of the Dead at upkeep means the board replenishes faster than any single board wipe can permanently clear it.
Open the Graves
Whenever a nontoken creature you control dies, create a 2/2 zombie token. In Wilhelt's deck, this combines with his decayed token generation to create a double-layered death replacement. A non-decayed zombie dies, Wilhelt creates a decayed token, and Open the Graves creates a second non-decayed zombie. That non-decayed zombie can die again to repeat the cycle. The interaction between Wilhelt and Open the Graves means non-decayed zombies effectively never permanently leave play.
Liliana, Untouched by Death
Mills three cards and creates a zombie if you mill one, protects your zombie army from removal, and lets you cast zombie spells from your graveyard when she ultimates. In a zombie deck, her +1 ability mills, creates zombies, and fills the graveyard for Diregraf Colossus simultaneously. Her -2 removes a creature blocking a zombie. The ultimate lets you cast every zombie in your graveyard for free in one turn — game-ending in a well-stocked bin.
How to Play
Deploy cheap zombies in the first three turns and get Wilhelt onto the battlefield as early as possible. The deck runs several two and three-drop zombies that contribute to the board immediately. Once Wilhelt is online, every zombie death generates a decayed replacement, and sacrificing that replacement at end of step draws a card. Rooftop Storm is the deck's most explosive turn — resolve it when you have four to six zombies in hand and cast them all for free. Win by overwhelming opponents with zombie tokens that regenerate faster than removal, backed by damage from Diregraf Colossus growing unbounded. Against resilient boards, Endless Ranks of the Dead ensures the army rebuilds every turn without any card investment.
