commander · Jared Carthalion
Painbow (DMC).
A five-color goodstuff deck led by Jared Carthalion, cast multicolor spells to distribute +1/+1 counters, build Jared into a massive threat, and win through the raw power of five-color mana access.
The Commanders
Painbow is a five-color Commander deck built around multicolor synergies and the raw card quality advantage of playing from all five colors. Jared Carthalion rewards you for casting multicolor spells with +1/+1 counters, growing himself into a real threat while your five-color access lets you play the best card for any situation. The deck plays like a goodstuff pile that gets better the more multicolor spells it can sequence.
Jared Carthalion starts as a 3/3 but grows fast. Whenever you cast a multicolor spell, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control, then if Jared has five or more +1/+1 counters on him, remove them all and he becomes the Monarch. The Monarch draws a card each end step and passes to whoever damages you. Jared creates a counter engine that turns your multicolor spell count into board-wide power while periodically converting those counters into drawing the most powerful card type in Commander.
Key Cards
Faeburrow Elder
Vigilance, and taps for one mana of each color among permanents you control. In a five-color deck, Faeburrow Elder often taps for five different colors at once, five mana from one creature. She's the single best mana accelerant in the deck, and she enables turns three and four that would otherwise be impossible. With Jared putting +1/+1 counters on her from multicolor spells, she becomes a 3/3 or 4/4 that taps for five mana.
Knight of New Alara
Each multicolor creature you control gets +1/+1 for each of its colors. A three-color creature gets +3/+3. A five-color creature gets +5/+5. Most threats in a five-color deck are multicolor, so Knight of New Alara pumps your entire board with a scaling bonus. When Jared has both Knight of New Alara and Faeburrow Elder in play, he's typically a 7/7 or 8/8 before any other effects.
General Ferrous Rokiric
Has protection from monocolored, so he's very difficult to target. Whenever you cast a multicolor spell, create a 4/4 red and white Golem artifact creature token. In a deck full of multicolor spells, Ferrous Rokiric creates 4/4 tokens constantly. Each Golem triggers Jared's counter distribution when the multicolor spell was cast, creating both a counter on all creatures and a 4/4 body from a single spell. Ferrous Rokiric is the deck's most efficient token generator.
Ramos, Dragon Engine
Gets +1/+1 counters for each color in the mana cost of spells you cast. Remove five counters to add ten mana in any combination of two colors. In a five-color deck with dense multicolor spells, Ramos accumulates five or six counters per turn and generates massive mana bursts on demand. A single Ramos activation provides ten mana, enough to cast two or three large spells in sequence. The deck's ramp is already strong; Ramos makes it overwhelming.
Coalition Relic
An artifact that taps for one mana of any color and, at the beginning of your end step, adds a charge counter. Then tap and remove all counters: add one mana of any color for each counter removed. Coalition Relic is the cornerstone mana fixer in five-color decks. On turn three it taps for one color, by turn five it produces three mana of any colors. It's never stranded on a color and provides the color fixing that prevents dead hands in an ambitious five-color mana base.
How to Play
Build your mana base aggressively in the first two to three turns using Coalition Relic, Faeburrow Elder, and basic ramp spells. Cast Jared on turn four and start deploying multicolor spells every turn; each spell grows all your creatures and builds Jared toward his Monarch trigger. Get General Ferrous Rokiric out to start converting each multicolor spell into a 4/4 Golem.
Win through combat damage with a board that grows larger each turn. Jared becoming the Monarch draws a card each end step, maintaining card advantage. Ramos provides burst mana to cast multiple spells in a single turn. Knight of New Alara makes every multicolor creature substantially larger. The deck closes games by overwhelming boards with value from five-color card quality while Jared attacks as a 10/10 or larger.
