commander · Atarka, World Render
Draconic Destruction (SCB).
A Gruul dragon deck from the Starter Commander Decks, led by Atarka, World Render — give your entire dragon army double strike whenever you attack, and ramp into the biggest creatures in the format.
The Commander
Draconic Destruction is the Starter Commander Decks' dragon precon, built around one of the most combat-dominant commanders in the format. Atarka has flying, trample, and a devastating triggered ability: whenever you attack, each dragon you control gains double strike until end of turn. A board of three dragons all gaining double strike in one attack step deals enough damage to end games outright. The deck ramps aggressively to cast Atarka on curve and supports her with a curated dragon package.
Atarka, World Render herself is a 6/4 with flying and trample — she hits for 12 damage in a single swing with double strike. A player at 40 life sees that 12 damage and knows Atarka kills them in less than four attacks without any other dragons helping. The deck's strategy is simple: ramp, cast Atarka, attack, win.
Key Cards
Lathliss, Dragon Queen
Whenever another nontoken dragon enters the battlefield under your control, create a 5/5 red Dragon token with flying. Pay one red mana to give all your dragons +1/+0 until end of turn. In Atarka's deck, every nontoken dragon you cast generates a free 5/5 token. With Atarka giving every dragon double strike on attack, Lathliss not only produces additional double strikers but also pumps the whole team for an additional +1/+0 at instant speed. One swing with three dragons plus Lathliss's activation deals a minimum of 38 damage across the board.
Dragon Tempest
Each dragon entering the battlefield gains haste. Whenever a dragon enters, it deals damage equal to the number of dragons you control to any target. In a deck that casts Atarka on turn six and wants to attack immediately, Dragon Tempest solves the haste problem. More importantly, every dragon entering deals damage to any target based on how many dragons you already control. The second dragon deals two damage, the third deals three — with Lathliss creating free tokens, that damage chain reaches lethal values quickly.
Drakuseth, Maw of Flames
Whenever Drakuseth attacks, it deals 4 damage to any target and 3 damage to each of up to two other targets. That's ten damage to three different things the moment Drakuseth swings. Combine with Atarka's double strike grant and you get twenty damage split three ways from the attack trigger alone. Drakuseth kills any creature blocking it outright and damages two additional targets before combat damage is even calculated.
Savage Ventmaw
Whenever Savage Ventmaw attacks, add three red and three green mana that doesn't empty from your mana pool at the end of combat. This is six free mana generated every attack. In a dragon deck that wants to cast threats and activate effects during combat, Ventmaw pays for spells at instant speed using the mana generated mid-combat. Cast a dragon during combat with that mana, trigger Dragon Tempest, and hit Atarka's double strike grant on a fresh attacker.
Crucible of Fire
All dragons you control get +3/+3. Atarka goes from a 6/4 to a 9/7. A 5/5 Dragon token from Lathliss becomes an 8/8. Every dragon in the deck is already a major threat — Crucible of Fire makes them all formidably large in combat. With Atarka granting double strike, an 8/8 Dragon token attacks for 16 damage, enough to kill any player in two swings. This enchantment turns every dragon from threatening into finishing.
How to Play
Ramp through turns two and three using the deck's green acceleration, then begin deploying dragons on turn four. Dragon Tempest solves the haste problem for Atarka and generates damage from every entry. Land Atarka by turn six and attack immediately — the double strike grant applies to every dragon you control, so even smaller dragons in the deck swing for double. The kill condition is straightforward: attack with three or four dragons, apply Atarka's double strike trigger, and deal enough damage to end the game in one or two combat steps. Savage Ventmaw's mana generation lets you develop the board mid-combat, and Lathliss ensures nontoken dragon entries always produce a backup attacker.
