commander · Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients
Draconic Rage (AFR).
A Gruul dragon deck from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, led by Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients — trigger his enrage ability to flood the board with 5/4 Dragon Spirit tokens that deal damage on their way out.
The Commander
Draconic Rage is an AFR Commander deck built around one of the most satisfying enrage loops in the format. Vrondiss is a 5/4 that generates a 5/4 Dragon Spirit token whenever he takes damage — and he deals 1 damage to himself whenever you roll dice. The deck runs a full dice-rolling package to trigger that enrage ability every turn, flooding the board with tokens that each deal damage when they die.
Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients is a perpetual token factory. Roll dice, deal 1 damage to himself, create a 5/4 token. That token deals damage when it dies, which can trigger further effects. Stack dice-rolling spells and the board grows faster than opponents can clear it. The backup strategy is straightforward Gruul dragon goodstuff — big bodies, combat payoffs, and green ramp to cast them ahead of curve.
Key Cards
Scourge of Valkas
Every dragon entering the battlefield deals damage equal to the number of dragons you control to any target. With Vrondiss pumping out 5/4 Dragon Spirit tokens every turn, Scourge of Valkas converts each new arrival into a damage trigger. Bring out four dragons at once and the last one deals four damage to each target of your choice. Scourge of Valkas alone can dome multiple opponents while you're building a lethal board.
Atarka, World Render
Whenever Atarka attacks, each dragon you control gains double strike until end of turn. In a board full of 5/4 Dragon Spirit tokens from Vrondiss, a single attack step turns the whole team into 10/4 double strikers. One swing with Atarka and four tokens kills most opponents outright. She represents the deck's most reliable one-turn kill once the token engine is running.
Savage Ventmaw
Whenever Savage Ventmaw attacks, add three red and three green mana. That's six free mana to spend on spells during combat or immediately after. In a deck that wants to chain large dragons, Ventmaw pays for the next threat the turn it attacks. It turns four mana into ten effective mana in combat, which means the deck can operate two turns ahead of schedule once Ventmaw is swinging.
Warstorm Surge
Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, it deals damage equal to its power to any target. Every 5/4 Dragon Spirit token Vrondiss creates deals five damage to any target the moment it arrives. Against opponents with low life totals, Warstorm Surge converts token generation into a direct damage win condition. Stack it with Scourge of Valkas and each token deals damage twice on entry.
Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient
Klauth adds mana equal to the total power of attacking creatures whenever he attacks. In a board with three or four dragons, that's fifteen to twenty mana generated in a single attack step. Cast two more dragons off that mana, trigger Scourge of Valkas twice, and the table is in trouble. Klauth serves as an alternate high-end threat — he hits as hard as any dragon in the deck and generates the mana to immediately reload your hand.
How to Play
Ramp aggressively through the first three turns. The deck runs a full suite of green acceleration so Vrondiss comes down on curve. Once Vrondiss is in play, prioritize dice-rolling spells that trigger his enrage — each roll creates a free 5/4 token without spending combat steps. Mid-game, deploy Scourge of Valkas or Warstorm Surge to convert token generation into direct damage. Close games two ways: attack with Atarka granting double strike to the whole token army, or burn opponents out through Scourge and Warstorm Surge damage triggers. The dice-rolling engine means the board refills faster than sweepers can clear it.
