The Commanders

Sevinne, the Chronoclasm
Sevinne, the Chronoclasm · Art by Eric Deschamps

Mystic Intellect is a Jeskai Commander deck built around flashback, reanimation, and spells cast from the graveyard. Sevinne turns every flashback spell into two copies — the first instant or sorcery you cast from your graveyard each turn is automatically copied. Deep Analysis draws four cards. Increasing Devotion creates 20 tokens. The whole deck functions as a flashback-powered value engine where every graveyard spell does twice its intended work.

Sevinne, the Chronoclasm costs {4}{R}{U}{W} and is a 2/2 Human Wizard. He prevents all damage that would be dealt to him. Whenever you cast the first instant or sorcery spell from your graveyard each turn, copy that spell and you may choose new targets for the copy. The copy trigger fires on flashback, jump-start, aftermath, and any other graveyard cast. Sevinne's damage immunity makes him nearly impossible to kill with combat or burn, forcing opponents to use targeted removal — which the deck counters with Elsha of the Infinite and Pramikon, Sky Rampart as alternate commanders.

Key Cards

Deep Analysis
Art by Gary Leach

Deep Analysis

Card draw that doubles through Sevinne. Deep Analysis draws two cards, with a flashback cost that also drains 3 life. Cast it from the graveyard with Sevinne in play: Sevinne copies it, you draw four cards total and lose 3 life. Four cards for {1}{U} and 3 life paid at flashback is one of the best rates available in Commander. The flashback trigger fires Sevinne's copy ability, the copy draws the second two cards, and you're up four cards on the turn for the price of one spell. This is the template for what the deck wants to do every single turn.

Talrand, Sky Summoner
Art by Jason Chan

Talrand, Sky Summoner

Drake generation from every spell. Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery, Talrand creates a 2/2 blue Drake with flying. In a deck that casts flashback spells twice per turn cycle, Talrand creates two or three Drakes per turn without additional mana investment. Sevinne's copy ability creates a second copy of each graveyard spell — which also triggers Talrand. One flashback cast generates two Drakes total: one from the original cast and one from Sevinne's copy. By mid game, Talrand has populated the air with a dozen flying 2/2s.

Backdraft Hellkite
Art by Grzegorz Rutkowski

Backdraft Hellkite

A 4/4 flying haste dragon that gives every instant and sorcery in your graveyard flashback until end of turn. Drop Backdraft Hellkite on turn six and immediately cast Deep Analysis twice (Sevinne copying each), Ignite the Future twice, and any other spells sitting in the bin. One Backdraft Hellkite turn can generate eight to twelve cards of value plus all the Talrand Drake triggers. It's the deck's most explosive single turn enabler and should be held for the turn you have enough mana to also cast two or three graveyard spells.

Ignite the Future
Art by Zack Stella

Ignite the Future

The deck's most powerful flashback draw spell. Ignite the Future exiles the top three cards of your library and lets you play them this turn. With flashback, you can cast it from the graveyard — and Sevinne copies it. Two copies of Ignite the Future exile six cards for you to play. This generates massive card selection without counting as "drawing" — counters on hand size and replacement effects don't apply. Combined with Backdraft Hellkite allowing the flashback at reduced cost, a single Ignite the Future turn can provide access to six free spells.

Elsha of the Infinite
Art by Zack Stella

Elsha of the Infinite

The alternate commander and top-of-library engine. Elsha lets you cast instants and sorceries from the top of your library and gives them flash when played that way. With a single scry effect, you set up the top of your library and fire from there at instant speed. Elsha replaces Sevinne entirely in a "cast from library" variant of the deck — she doesn't need the graveyard setup that Sevinne requires. Against graveyard-hate-heavy pods, Elsha is the correct commander choice.

How to Play

Establish card draw in the first three turns through cantrips and ramp. Get Sevinne into play by turn five and immediately mill or flashback a spell to test the copy trigger. The deck's engine doesn't activate until Sevinne is in play and you have flashback spells in the graveyard — so the first few turns should be spent discarding or milling spells into the bin with Faithless Looting and similar effects. Mid game: every flashback spell doubles, every spell generates Drakes from Talrand. Backdraft Hellkite is your explosive turn. Win by deploying a wide Drake army from Talrand plus direct combat damage, or by generating such overwhelming card advantage that opponents' resources deplete before yours.
