The Commander

Millicent, Restless Revenant
Millicent, Restless Revenant · Art by Denman Rooke

Spirit Squadron is the Azorius spirit tribal precon from Crimson Vow and Millicent turns combat into a token generation machine. She costs less for each Spirit you control, and whenever she or another nontoken Spirit deals combat damage to a player or dies, you create a 1/1 flying Spirit token. Every swing with your spirit army replaces any attacker that gets blocked while also adding to your numbers. The deck naturally grows every combat step.

Millicent, Restless Revenant rewards aggressive attacks — blocking a spirit just creates another spirit. Her affinity for Spirits means she reliably hits the battlefield for three or four mana rather than seven. The deck runs Rhoda and Timin as alternate commander partners for a more political tap-down strategy, but Millicent is the straightforward aggressive choice.

Key Cards

Selfless Spirit
Art by Chase Stone

Selfless Spirit

A two-mana 2/1 flying spirit that sacrifices itself to give all your creatures indestructible until end of turn. In a spirit deck, Selfless Spirit both satisfies Millicent's affinity reduction and protects your entire team from board wipes. Sacrifice it in response to Wrath of God and your whole army survives. It dies as a spirit, which triggers Millicent's token generation — the sacrifice itself creates the replacement body you need.

Kindred Discovery
Art by Lake Hurwitz

Kindred Discovery

Name Spirit and draw a card whenever a spirit enters the battlefield or attacks. In a deck that generates spirit tokens every combat step, Kindred Discovery converts aggressive play into a massive card advantage engine. Attack with eight spirits, draw eight cards. Each of those spirits dying to combat triggers Millicent's token generation, filling your hand while rebuilding the board simultaneously. This enchantment wins games by overwhelming opponents with card count.

Spell Queller
Art by Adam Paquette

Spell Queller

A flash flying spirit that exiles a spell with mana value four or less when it enters. If Spell Queller dies, the exiled spell's owner can cast it without paying its mana cost. Queller is the deck's primary interaction piece — it stops sweepers and key threats while counting as a spirit for Millicent's affinity reduction. Flash means it ambushes opponents on their turn. If it dies, trigger Millicent's token generation before the exiled spell resolves.

Intangible Virtue
Art by Nils Hamm

Intangible Virtue

Creature tokens you control get +1/+1 and have vigilance. Millicent generates 1/1 flying spirit tokens every combat. With Intangible Virtue, those tokens become 2/2 vigilant flyers — creatures that attack without tapping, meaning they defend against flying attackers the same turn they attack. A board full of 2/2 vigilant spirits is significantly harder to race than a board of 1/1s, and each one still triggers Millicent's token generation when it deals damage.

Geist of Saint Traft
Art by Igor Kieryluk

Geist of Saint Traft

A 2/2 hexproof spirit that creates a 4/4 Angel token with flying that attacks alongside him and is sacrificed at end of combat. Geist's hexproof makes him unkillable through targeted removal, and every attack creates a temporary 4/4 flyer. In a deck that already generates tokens from combat, Geist creates one of the most efficient three-mana threats in Commander — a hexproof attacker that's effectively a 6/6 spread across two bodies every combat.

How to Play

Build a wide spirit board in the first three to four turns and keep the mana curve low. Millicent's affinity reduction means she reliably lands for three mana once you have three spirits — aim to cast her on turn four. From there, attack every turn: Millicent's token generation on combat damage means each attacking spirit either deals damage or creates a replacement when it dies. Protect the team with Selfless Spirit against board wipes. Mid-game, Kindred Discovery turns the spirit attack swarm into a card advantage machine. Win by overwhelming the board with recursive flying tokens, applying vigilance via Intangible Virtue so the board defends and attacks simultaneously.
