The Commander

Strefan, Maurer Progenitor
Strefan, Maurer Progenitor · Art by Chris Rallis

Vampiric Bloodline is the Rakdos vampire precon from Crimson Vow and Strefan builds the most efficient vampire cheat engine in the format. At the beginning of your end step, you create a Blood token for each player who lost life that turn. Whenever Strefan attacks, you can sacrifice two Blood tokens to put any vampire from your hand directly onto the battlefield tapped and attacking, with indestructible until end of turn. The loop sustains itself: vampires deal damage, opponents lose life, Blood tokens appear, more vampires enter for free.

Strefan, Maurer Progenitor turns incidental life loss — from your own life gain, from combat, from spell effects — into free vampire deployment. A three-player pod means opponents losing life generates three Blood tokens per turn. Two turns of that and you're dropping seven-mana vampires for free on turn five. Olivia, Crimson Bride serves as an alternate commander for a greedier reanimation strategy.

Key Cards

Olivia, Crimson Bride
Art by Magali Villeneuve

Olivia, Crimson Bride

A 3/4 flying haste vampire that brings back any vampire from your graveyard when she attacks. The returned vampire gains haste and is exiled when Olivia leaves. In a deck where Strefan drops vampires tapped and attacking and some will die in combat, Olivia converts those deaths into recurring attack triggers. She enters, swings, returns a vampire from the graveyard that attacks alongside her the same turn. Against opponent removal, the reanimated vampire's exile clause only matters if Olivia herself gets removed.

Bloodtithe Harvester
Art by Chase Stone

Bloodtithe Harvester

Creates a Blood token on entry and can sacrifice itself plus a Blood token to give target creature -X/-X until end of turn where X is 4. In Strefan's deck, Harvester arrives and immediately generates a Blood token, which counts toward the two needed for Strefan's attack trigger. The sacrifice mode removes a problematic creature at instant speed. Harvester does three things — Blood generation, removal, and dying as a vampire to trigger any death-payoffs in the deck.

Stromkirk Captain
Art by Chris Rahn

Stromkirk Captain

A three-mana 2/2 first striker that gives all other vampires you control +1/+1 and first strike. In a deck that deploys large vampires for free via Strefan's attack trigger, Stromkirk Captain turns those already-powerful vampires into first strike threats. A 5/4 vampire with first strike kills most blockers before they deal damage, meaning your indestructible attackers from Strefan's trigger connect clean. Captain is the pump piece that makes the vampire army combat-dominant.

Butcher of Malakir
Art by Peter Mohrbacher

Butcher of Malakir

A 5/4 flying vampire demon that triggers Grave Pact for each player whenever a creature you control dies. Opponent must sacrifice a creature whenever one of your creatures dies. In a deck that deploys creatures tapped and attacking — meaning some will die in combat each turn — Butcher of Malakir forces opponents to sacrifice their best blocker every time your vampire army attacks into defenders. It converts your natural attrition into their board destruction.

Anje, Maid of Dishonor
Art by Magali Villeneuve

Anje, Maid of Dishonor

Creates a Blood token whenever a Vampire enters the battlefield or attacks. Sacrifice a Blood: target player loses 2 life and you gain 2 life. In Strefan's deck, Anje converts every Strefan trigger — which deploys a vampire attacking — into a Blood token and a life drain when you sacrifice it. The life swing from sacrificing Blood tokens is also the source of more Blood tokens at Strefan's end step, since opponents are losing life. Anje is both an accelerant and a win condition.

How to Play

Get Strefan onto the battlefield by turn three and let him start accumulating Blood tokens. The key is ensuring opponents lose life every turn — your own vampires attacking contributes to this, as does any incidental life drain from spells. Once you have two Blood tokens, Strefan's attack trigger can drop a vampire from your hand tapped and attacking for free. Prioritize large high-impact vampires in your hand for Strefan to cheat — a free Butcher of Malakir on turn four is a devastating board state. Mid-game, Stromkirk Captain turns the free attacker chain into a first-strike army. Win through combat pressure backed by Butcher of Malakir forcing sacrifice triggers and Anje draining life with each Blood spent.
