Paper Decides What the Printer Can't
Hours dialing in ICC profiles and rendering intent, then printing on whatever ream was in the tray. That's the common mistake. A well-calibrated printer on the wrong paper produces cards that look washed out, flex wrong in hand, and either slide loose in sleeves or won't go in at all.
Paper determines three things printer settings can't fix: how the card feels, how ink sits on the surface (which drives color depth at card scale), and whether the finished card seats cleanly in a sleeve. We ran every paper here through a range of home inkjets, from budget EcoTank models to wide-format photo printers. These are the results.
What the Test Measures
- Weight (gsm): How the card feels and how it handles shuffling and sleeving
- Finish: Matte vs. glossy vs. uncoated, which affects glare, texture, and how ink bonds
- Cost per sheet: Matters across a 100-card Commander deck
- Sleeve compatibility: Does the finished card drop into a perfect-fit inner without forcing?
- Jam risk: Rear-feed paths are more forgiving; front-feed trays have hard limits
170-200 gsm: Where Home Printers Work
Standard 80 lb copy paper sits around 90-100 gsm. It prints, but the card flexes in your fingers, shows through sleeves under overhead lighting, and creases the first time you miss a sleeve. Players who print on copy paper and think the result looks off usually diagnose it as a color problem. It's a weight problem.
At the other end, 330 gsm black-core is what purpose-made proxy printers use. The snap is right, the opacity is correct. The catch: standard front-load trays with a curved paper path will jam or crease it. Not an everyday option for most setups.
170-200 gsm is where home printers stay reliable and the cards feel noticeably better. A 180 gsm matte sheet has enough body to hold shape in a sleeve, enough opacity that you can't see through it, and clears standard paper trays. That's the working range.
Matte vs. Glossy: The Case for Matte at the Table
Glossy produces richer, more saturated color from the inkjet. That's accurate. At the table, it creates two problems: overhead lighting produces glare across the card surface, and every fingerprint shows after the first shuffle. After a few sessions, a glossy proxy looks handled in a way matte doesn't.
Matte also hides minor print defects. Small banding or color drift visible on glossy disappears into the matte surface texture. For cards going into sleeves, the slight texture seats better in perfect-fit inners. Glossy cards can stick or slide in ways matte doesn't.
Glossy makes sense for show cards printed for display, or any card where you want maximum color and aren't sleeving it. For a functioning deck, matte.

The Default Pick
Koala Matte 180gsm is what we print on by default. The 180 gsm weight hits the sleeve sweet spot: thick enough to feel right in hand, thin enough to drop into a perfect-fit inner without forcing. Matte coating handles ink well across a wide range of inkjets, including budget EcoTank models, and delivers consistent color without glare problems. ~$0.15 per sheet for a 100-sheet pack. Feeds cleanly through front-load trays and rear-feed paths.
The Heavy Stock Upgrade
330gsm Black Core is the only home-printable stock that passes the hands-on test: the snap when you pick up the card, the feel when you shuffle. The black core layer eliminates light bleed. The weight genuinely replicates the feel of a real card in a way 180 gsm doesn't reach.
What it costs: price per sheet nearly triples, and you need a straight-through rear-feed path. Without one, cards jam or crease on the feed curve. With one (most dedicated photo printers and several mid-range inkjets), it's worth having for cards that have to feel right.
What to Avoid
Standard copy paper (80-90 gsm): Too thin. Flexes in hand, shows through under direct light, creases in sleeves. Not a color problem. A weight problem.
Glossy laser paper: Toner sits on top of the coating rather than bonding into it. Looks fine off the printer, then starts cracking at the edges after the first few shuffles. Inkjet glossy paper is a different material. Not interchangeable.
Anything under 150 gsm: No weight below 150 gsm makes a good proxy substrate. High-quality photo paper at 135 gsm feels wrong in a sleeve: too much flex, not enough body.
Once your paper choice is locked in, consider whether ICC profiles are worth setting up for your printer-paper combination to close the last color gap.
