The Label Problem
Walk into any office supply store and try to buy cardstock for proxy printing. You'll find "80lb cover," "100lb text," "170gsm," "300gsm." None of it cross-references cleanly. Paper uses two measurement systems on different scales.
Short version: lb cover weight measures a stack of large uncut sheets; gsm (grams per square meter) is a direct weight that means the same thing everywhere. The "lb" number shifts depending on whether you're measuring cover, text, or bond stock. The same physical paper can carry three different pound ratings and one consistent gsm number.
The conversions that matter:
- 80 lb cover ≈ 216 gsm: the most common "cardstock" for home printers
- 100 lb cover ≈ 270 gsm: noticeably heavier, approaching playing-card density
- 170 to 180 gsm: the home photo paper sweet spot (no lb equivalent at most retailers)
Think in gsm and the buying decisions get simpler.
What a Real MTG Card Weighs
A genuine Magic card runs about 300 to 350 gsm. Weight alone isn't the whole story. A black-core inner layer adds rigidity and opacity. That core gives the card its density on the table, blocks light bleed, and stops flex under shuffling pressure.
That's the target. Every paper decision is about how close you can get to that feel given what your printer can physically handle.
The Weight Tiers
60 to 90 gsm (copy paper)
Standard printer paper. Works as a placeholder. The cards flop in hand, edges crinkle at the first shuffle, and even inside a sleeve you can feel the difference. Don't use copy paper for proxies you intend to play with more than once.
170 to 180 gsm (home printing sweet spot)
Where proxy printing starts to feel right. Cards on 180 gsm matte photo paper have genuine body without being stiff, sleeve without trouble, and pass a casual inspection. Koala Matte Photo Paper 180 gsm is the default in this range. Consistent feed, good color, priced for 100-card decks.
200 gsm (heavy cover stock)
A noticeable step up. At 200 gsm you feel real snap when you bend a corner. Not quite a Magic card, but noticeably closer. Most inkjets handle this without complaint; laser printers need the rear feed slot at this weight. Bottom-tray feeds bend the stock on entry and can cause jams or feed errors. 200 gsm Cover Stock prints cleanly on most inkjets with rear feed enabled.
270 gsm / 100 lb cover (near real-card density)
Real density. Cards sit on the table differently, don't fan out too easily, and feel close to a retail printing in a sleeve. The trade-off is printer compatibility. Most laser printers struggle or jam. An inkjet with a straight rear feed handles it. Accent Opaque 100 lb is the standard here. Consistent, widely available, feeds reliably through rear-feed inkjets. Rear feed is not optional at this weight.
330 gsm black core (professional standard)
Where real playing cards live. The black core adds opacity and rigidity that lower weights can't replicate. Cards snap back, block light cleanly, and pass as retail in a sleeve. In practice, most home printers jam on 330 gsm through a bottom tray. A rear-feed printer handles it, but test on one sheet before committing a full run. 330 gsm Black Core is the right pick for players who have the hardware to support it. Not a starting point.

Feed Path Is a Hardware Constraint
Paper weight sets a hardware limit, not just a feel question. Bottom-tray feeds pull paper around a curved roller. At 200 gsm that curve starts to resist. At 270 gsm stock creases or misfeeds on most hardware. At 330 gsm most printers won't grab it. Rear or straight-through feeds don't bend the stock at entry.
Laser toner adds a variable: toner sits on top of the fiber rather than soaking in. On heavy uncoated stock, it can crack under flex stress across hundreds of bare shuffles. Sleeved play eliminates the problem.
Practical rule: if your printer has no rear or straight-through feed slot, stay at or below 200 gsm. Above that, you're fighting the hardware.
Coated vs Uncoated at the Same Weight
At identical gsm, coated matte paper (photo paper) and uncoated cover stock print and feel differently. Coated paper holds ink at the surface before drying. Edges come out crisper, blacks deeper, color more saturated. Uncoated stock absorbs more ink. The look is a little softer, but the texture sits closer to a real card. Real Magic cards are not coated paper.
Coated 180 gsm gives the best-looking prints. Uncoated 270 gsm gives the closest physical feel to a real card. Which matters more depends on whether you're optimizing for appearance or feel.
The Starting Points
Start at 170 to 180 gsm matte photo paper. Prints on almost any inkjet, sleeves without trouble, passes a casual inspection. Koala Matte 180 gsm is the default.
Once you have a printer with a rear feed slot, upgrade to 271 gsm Accent Opaque 100 lb. The density difference is real and the cards feel right in a way 180 gsm doesn't reach.
Black core only if you want the full premium experience, have confirmed your printer handles it, and accept a small jam risk on first runs with a new batch. 330 gsm Black Core is the closest you'll get to a retail card at home. It asks more of the hardware to get there.
