Duplex Alignment Has Three Failure Points

Double-faced cards (Delver of Secrets, Werewolf Pack Leader, Huntmaster of the Fells) are among the most useful proxies and the hardest to print correctly. Alignment needs to land within 1 to 2 mm to look right. Most home laser printers have a built-in registration offset that works against you.

Three fixes solve 90% of duplex problems. All three can be applied in one afternoon. Make sure your bleed and cut line settings are also dialed in. Bleed on the back face forgives minor misalignment by hiding it in the trim.

Fix 1: Measure Your Registration Offset

Every laser printer shifts the second pass slightly relative to the first. The Brother L8260's offset is about 1.5 mm toward the leading edge. The HP Color LaserJet Pro's is about 0.8 mm toward the trailing edge.

To measure yours: print a page with registration marks (download the calibration sheet from the Builder), then measure the offset with a ruler. Note the direction and distance: "back is 1.5 mm left, 0.5 mm up."

Once you have the number, compensate in your PDF layout. The Builder has an offset field for this.

Fix 2: Manual Duplex, Not Auto

Auto-duplex feeds paper back through a curved path that introduces inconsistency. Manual duplex removes the mechanical variability entirely.

The process:

  1. Print all fronts. Stack face-down.
  2. Flip the stack. Do not change orientation.
  3. Feed the stack back through the manual tray.
  4. Print all backs.

Do not change orientation when you flip. The most common manual duplex mistake is rotating the paper. Don't. Flip along the long edge, the same way you'd turn a page in a book.

Fix 3: Run the Jig First

The registration jig is a single sheet with corner marks that lets you verify front-back alignment before committing a full card sheet. Print the jig, check the marks, adjust your offset, then print cards.

This step eliminates the wasted paper that trips up most new proxy printers. One jig sheet saves a lot of frustration.
