The Commanders

Zinnia, Valley's Voice
Zinnia, Valley's Voice · Art by the card's artist

Family Matters is a Jeskai token deck from Bloomburrow built on the set's new Offspring mechanic. Pay the offspring cost on a spell and you get a doubled copy of the creature, and Zinnia pays you extra every time a token or copy enters the battlefield. The deck backs this with classic Jeskai enter-the-battlefield payoffs so every spell is worth about twice as much.

Zinnia, Valley's Voice hands you extra value whenever you create a creature token or a creature enters as a copy. Her ability scales with how many copies and tokens you make, and in a deck built around Offspring you make them constantly. Each Zinnia trigger makes your token flood hit harder, tacking damage, life, or a card onto an already wide board.

Key Cards

Panharmonicon

Panharmonicon

The deck's most powerful artifact (commonly added). Panharmonicon doubles all enter-the-battlefield abilities, so every creature that enters now triggers twice. In a deck already making multiple token copies through Offspring, that means Siege-Gang Commander makes six Goblins instead of three, Restoration Angel blinks two creatures, and every creature you play pays out twice. Panharmonicon turns a good token deck into a ridiculous one.

Siege-Gang Commander

A token engine with a built-in sacrifice outlet. Siege-Gang Commander creates three 1/1 Goblin tokens when it enters. Pay one mana and sacrifice a Goblin to deal 2 damage to any target. Those Goblins attack and double as damage, so you can turn spare tokens straight into reach. And since Zinnia triggers on each token, one Siege-Gang stacks up a pile of value the moment it lands.

Restoration Angel

Restoration Angel

A flash creature that blinks another non-Angel creature you control. The blink re-triggers that creature's enter-the-battlefield ability, so Restoration Angel can fire a Siege-Gang Commander ETB again, reuse an Offspring creature's ability, or yank a key creature out of a removal spell at instant speed. With Panharmonicon, the blink triggers twice. Cast on the end step before your turn, it's one of the most efficient value plays in the precon.

Elspeth, Sun's Champion

Elspeth, Sun's Champion

A planeswalker that makes tokens and clears the board. Elspeth's +1 makes three 1/1 Soldier tokens. Since Zinnia triggers on each token, one activation gives you three Zinnia triggers on top of the bodies. Her -3 destroys every creature with power four or greater, a wipe that leaves your small tokens alone while it clears opponents' big threats. She's the deck's best card for taking control of a game.

Impact Tremors

Impact Tremors

Two mana for a damage trigger on every creature entry. Impact Tremors deals 1 damage to each opponent whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control. In a deck that makes 20 to 30 creatures a game through tokens and Offspring copies, that's 20 to 30 damage per opponent, often enough to end multiple players. It doesn't combo with Panharmonicon (the trigger isn't an ETB on the creature), but the sheer number of entries makes it brutal anyway.

Selfless Spirit

Selfless Spirit

Board wipe protection for two mana. Sacrifice Selfless Spirit to give your creatures indestructible until end of turn. That's exactly what a token-flood deck wants against Wrath of God effects. An opponent sees your board pile up and reaches for a sweeper, you sacrifice Selfless Spirit in response, and your tokens live. Board wipes are this deck's biggest weakness, and this is the cheapest answer to them in Jeskai colors.

How to Play

The first two turns are about mana rocks. Turn three drops Zinnia, turn four or five deploys your first Offspring creature. From there, pay the Offspring cost whenever you can, because a doubled token is worth the extra mana in this deck. Stack the board as fast as you can.

Mid-game, get Impact Tremors or Warstorm Surge down before your big token turns. A single turn where you play Siege-Gang Commander, two Offspring creatures, and a token-doubler often ends the game on damage triggers alone. Protect your board with Selfless Spirit and Restoration Angel. Most games you win on the piled-up Impact Tremors damage plus combat from a huge token army. Elspeth also closes fast, making tokens every turn from behind a board that keeps growing.
