The Commanders

Aminatou, the Fateshifter
Aminatou, the Fateshifter · Art by Seb McKinnon

Subjective Reality is an Esper Commander deck built around stacking the top of your library, flickering permanents for repeated enters-the-battlefield triggers, and drawing from a deck you've already ordered. Aminatou is the only Legendary Planeswalker allowed as your Commander, and she does all three jobs in one package: top-deck manipulation, card draw, and instant-speed flicker.

Aminatou, the Fateshifter is a Legendary Planeswalker costing {W}{U}{B} with starting loyalty 3. Her +1 draws a card and puts a card from your hand on top of your library. Her -1 exiles another target permanent you own, then returns it to the battlefield under your control. Her -6 ultimate lets each player choose any number of permanents they own, exile them, then return them to the battlefield. It's a three-player Wrath and an ETB chain at the same time. The other commanders are Varina, Lich Queen (Zombie tribal) and Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign (odd-mana-value spell cheating).

Key Cards

Oath of Teferi
Art by Chase Stone

Oath of Teferi

An enchantment that makes Aminatou twice as good. Oath of Teferi lets your planeswalkers activate two loyalty abilities per turn instead of one. With it in play, Aminatou can +1 to draw and top-deck, then -1 to flicker a permanent for an ETB trigger on the same turn. Or plus twice and race toward her -6. Oath of Teferi sets up some of the strongest turns any planeswalker commander can have. Aminatou can draw two cards, move two cards to the top, or mix all three modes.

Solemn Simulacrum
Art by Greg Staples

Solemn Simulacrum

The deck's most efficient flicker target. Solemn Simulacrum enters and fetches a basic land, and it draws a card when it dies. Aminatou's -1 exiles it and returns it, so you fetch a land again. Do it every turn she uses her -1: another land, more cards, more mana. When you can flicker it over and over, Solemn Simulacrum hands you a land and a card every Aminatou activation, turning loyalty straight into mana and cards.

Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign
Art by Izzy

Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign

The alternate commander that rewards top-of-library manipulation. Yennett is a 3/5 Sphinx with flying, vigilance, and menace. Whenever she deals combat damage to a player, look at the top card of your library, and if it has odd mana value, cast it for free. Aminatou's +1 loads the top of your library with known cards before Yennett swings, so each attack casts a free 5, 7, or 9 CMV spell. Aminatou stacks the deck and Yennett fires the expensive spells at no cost.

Teferi's Ageless Insight
Art by Chris Rahn

Entreat the Dead

Mass reanimation that Aminatou can set up on top. Entreat the Dead is a miracle card: pay its miracle cost when you draw it and return every creature from your graveyard with mana value X or less for zero mana. Aminatou's +1 puts a chosen card on top, which makes miracle reliable. The first draw of your next turn after her +1 turns on the miracle cost. Bringing your whole graveyard of creatures back for two mana in the late game is the deck's biggest single recovery.

Varina, Lich Queen
Art by Izzy

Varina, Lich Queen

The alternate zombie-tribal commander. Varina is a 4/4 Zombie Wizard who draws and discards for each attacking Zombie while gaining life. As commander, she swaps the top-library theme for a Zombie tribal beatdown. Each Zombie attack draws a card and discards one, which stocks the graveyard with Zombies for her activated ability that makes tokens from discarded Zombie cards. In pods where politics matter less than board presence, Varina applies steadier pressure than Aminatou's combo plan.

How to Play

The first few turns are about mana. Esper wants three colors, so get mana rocks down early. Play Aminatou on turn three and use her +1 every turn to filter your draws and order your key cards. Hunt for Oath of Teferi to unlock double activations. The main plan is grinding value with Solemn Simulacrum and flicker effects, not racing to the ultimate. When an opponent builds a scary board, Aminatou's -6 resets every owned permanent at once, which retriggers ETBs across the table and can break apart what opponents have assembled. You win with Yennett damage plus free spells, or on the raw card advantage of an Aminatou and Oath of Teferi engine drawing two cards a turn cycle.
