Mechanics
Planeswalker commanders
Every deck is led by a planeswalker that can be your commander, printed with that line on the card. It changes how the command zone plays, since loyalty survives between turns but a removal spell ends the whole plan.
Umbra armor
The Totem armor Auras sacrifice themselves instead of letting the enchanted creature die. Four of them sit in the Bant deck, which is what keeps an Aura heavy board from folding to one removal spell.
Landfall
Landfall triggers when a land enters. Lord Windgrace returns lands from the graveyard, so the Jund deck triggers landfall on cards it already used once.
Constellation
Constellation triggers whenever an enchantment enters. It gives the Bant deck a reason to play cheap Auras rather than only expensive ones.
The set
Commander 2018 is the batch where every deck is led by a planeswalker. That was new at the time, and it produced four commanders that play very differently from a creature in the command zone: harder to interact with in combat, easier to remove outright, and always ticking toward something.
Two of these have real staying power. Lord Windgrace is still one of the better lands commanders in the format, and Aminatou remains the go to blink and top of library commander for Esper. Estrid and Brudiclad have narrower followings but both do something no other legend quite does.
The decks themselves are middling out of the box. The value here is in the commanders and a handful of new cards that ended up in decks well outside this product.
Where to start
Nature's Vengeance if you like long games and land recursion. Exquisite Invention if you want the deck that makes a table groan when the trigger resolves.
The decks 4
Estrid, the Masked
A Bant enchantress deck led by Estrid, the Masked, enchant your lands with Auras that produce extra mana, use Estrid's plus ability to untap them all, and combine Enchantress creatures that draw cards on every enchantment cast into an unstoppable resource engine.
Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer
An Izzet artifact tokens deck led by Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer, create small tokens from Treasures, Clues, and Thopters, then convert your entire token army into copies of your biggest threat with Brudiclad's combat trigger.
Lord Windgrace
A Jund lands deck led by Lord Windgrace, discard lands to draw cards, return those lands from the graveyard to play, trigger landfall payoffs repeatedly, and close games with Windgrace's game-ending ultimate that creates enormous land-based token armies.
Aminatou, the Fateshifter
An Esper top-of-library and flicker deck led by Aminatou, the Fateshifter, manipulate the top of your deck to control what you draw, blink your own permanents for ETB value, and chain flicker effects into overwhelming card and board advantage.
