Mechanics

  • Partner

Two commanders with partner can lead a deck together. Commander Legends printed it on more than ninety cards, which permanently changed how many two color pairs the format could reach.

  • Encore

Exile a creature from your graveyard and pay its encore cost to get an attacking token copy aimed at each opponent, sacrificed at end of turn. Built for multiplayer and useless in a duel.

  • Cascade

Cascade casts a cheaper spell for free off the top of your library. The set uses it as its splashy value mechanic and printed fourteen cards with it.

  • Landfall

Landfall triggers when a land enters. Aesi turns extra land drops into cards, so landfall in the Simic deck compounds rather than sitting at one trigger per turn.

The set

Commander Legends was the first set designed to be drafted and then played as Commander, and its lasting mark on the format is partner. Ninety odd partner cards mean that pairing two legends became a normal deck building choice rather than a novelty.

The two preconstructed decks that shipped alongside are simpler than the draft environment they came from. Neither is trying to break the format. They are clean starting points for two evergreen archetypes: gear on one big creature, and lands into more lands.

Encore is the mechanic most people met here and then forgot. Paying to exile a creature from your graveyard for attacking token copies aimed at each opponent is enormous at a four player table and does nothing in a duel, which makes it a good example of how differently this set was designed compared to a Standard release.

Neither precon uses partner much, which is a little odd given the set. If you want the partner experience, that came from the draft boosters rather than the decks, and the two commanders here are meant to be played solo.

Where to start

Reap the Tide is the stronger box and Aesi still holds up. Arm for Battle is the more focused deck and the one that ends games faster when it is left alone.
