The Commanders

Food and Fellowship is an Abzan Commander deck centered on the Hobbits of Middle-earth and their most iconic theme: food. The deck generates Food tokens at an aggressive rate, converts those tokens into life, cards, and mana, and uses the Ring temptation mechanic to push Frodo into a combat threat. It's a midrange value deck that outgrinds opponents over a long game.

Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit is a Partner commander paired with Sam. Frodo has a Ring temptation trigger built in — whenever he becomes your Ring-bearer, he gains a permanent buff (first skulk, then lifelink, then ward). The more the Ring tempts you, the harder Frodo is to block and kill. Frodo becomes a genuine attacker that opponents struggle to deal with as the game goes long.

Sam, Loyal Attendant is Frodo's partner. Sam creates a Food token at the beginning of combat on your turn and reduces the activation cost of Food abilities by one. Every turn, your Food engine gets a free token. Sam makes the resource generation consistent from turn three onward — no cards needed, just Sam tapping and the board building.

Key Cards

Treebeard, Gracious Host
Art by Diego Gisbert

Treebeard, Gracious Host

One of the best new cards in the deck. Treebeard creates a Food token whenever a nontoken creature enters the battlefield under your control, and you can sacrifice a Food to give target creature +2/+2 until end of turn. He's a Food generator that rewards playing creatures — exactly what this deck does all game. His pump ability turns any creature into a surprise combat threat and enables favorable trades when opponents attack.

Gollum, Obsessed Stalker
Art by Andrew Mar

Gollum, Obsessed Stalker

Gollum has an activated ability: pay two mana and sacrifice a Food to put a -1/-1 counter on target creature. Repeatable removal tied to the Food engine means excess Food tokens become spot removal. He also tempts you with the Ring whenever an opponent draws their second card each turn, building Frodo's strength passively just from opponents drawing cards. Gollum sits in the deck as both a removal outlet and a Ring trigger machine.

Well of Lost Dreams
Art by Rob Alexander

Well of Lost Dreams

Whenever you gain life, you may pay mana to draw that many cards. In a deck that sacrifices Food tokens for three life each and runs a lifelink commander, this converts your life gain directly into card draw. A single turn where you sacrifice three Foods and drain twenty life from combat triggers Well for six or more draw triggers. Well of Lost Dreams is the card that turns Food generation from a value engine into a card advantage machine that outruns any opponent.

Tireless Provisioner
Art by Chris Rallis

Tireless Provisioner

Creates a Food or Treasure token each time a land enters the battlefield under your control. With green ramp spells dropping extra lands, Tireless Provisioner converts every land drop into either free mana acceleration or Food engine fuel. He's one of the best ramp-and-Food synergy cards in the deck and ensures you never lack resources while building toward the late game.

Merry, Warden of Isengard
Art by Billy Christian

Merry, Warden of Isengard

A new LOTR card. Merry prevents opponents from activating abilities of artifacts unless they pay two additional mana. This hoses a wide range of strategies — artifact mana rocks become more expensive, Treasure sinks become prohibitive, and Food tokens owned by opponents cost more to sacrifice. It's also a Hobbit for Hobbit tribal payoffs. Merry slows down the most common Commander game plans while contributing to your own board.

How to Play

Build the Food engine early: Sam's Food production starts turn three and accelerates quickly with Treebeard and Tireless Provisioner online. Deploy Frodo once the Ring temptation is ready to start upgrading his combat profile. Let Sam generate tokens passively while you cast creatures to trigger Treebeard, building a surplus of Food that powers your midgame.

Win through two paths: chip in with Frodo as an increasingly unblockable attacker while life drain from Food sacrifices pressures the table, or set up Well of Lost Dreams to convert your life gain into a massive card advantage engine that outgrinds everyone. The deck is resilient and difficult to race — you gain enough life that aggressive decks struggle to kill you before you stabilize.
