The Commanders

Riders of Rohan is a Jeskai Commander deck themed around the human warriors of Rohan and Gondor. The deck plays aggressive creature-based combat with a focus on legendary humans, combat-enabling spells, and the kind of wide board that Shared Animosity turns into a lethal alpha strike. It rewards knowing when to attack and when to set up the perfect combat.

Éowyn, Shieldmaiden is the deck's primary aggressor. When she attacks, you may pay three mana to copy the top instant or sorcery in an opponent's graveyard and cast it for free. She generates a free copy of the most powerful spell that's been cast this game every time she attacks — opponent played a sweeper? Attack with Éowyn and copy it. She also gets a buff whenever a Human you control dies. She's a recursive threat and value engine in one card.

Aragorn, King of Gondor is the midrange alternative. When Aragorn attacks, he tempts you with the Ring and taps up to one target creature an opponent controls until your next turn. He handles the best blocker on attack and accumulates Ring temptation upgrades over several turns. Against pods where Éowyn's copy trigger is less relevant, Aragorn provides reliable tempo and builds toward a powerful Ring-bearer.

Key Cards

Shared Animosity
Art by Mark Hyzer

Shared Animosity

Each attacking creature gets +1/+0 for each other attacking creature that shares a creature type with it. With a board of ten Warriors, each Warrior attacks as a 10/1 or better. One alpha strike with Shared Animosity active is frequently lethal against opponents who haven't set up a substantial blocker wall. The deck fills its board with Humans and Warriors specifically to maximize this payoff.

Théoden, King of Rohan
Art by Lie Setiawan

Théoden, King of Rohan

A new card from the LOTR Commander set. Théoden is a Human Warrior lord that gives all Humans and Warriors you control haste and +1/+1 for each legendary creature you control. In a deck packed with Aragorn, Éowyn, and other legendary humans, Théoden makes every creature a substantial threat that attacks the turn it enters. The haste is especially relevant — opponents rarely see a sudden flood of fast attackers coming.

Erkenbrand, Lord of Westfold
Art by Filipe Pagliuso

Erkenbrand, Lord of Westfold

Erkenbrand gives all Humans and Warriors you control first strike and lets you draw a card when he attacks if you control another legendary creature. In a deck with consistent legendary density, Erkenbrand draws a card every attack step. First strike changes favorable combat math — your creatures deal damage first, preventing losses from trading with larger blockers. He's both a lord and a card advantage engine.

Prince Imrahil the Fair

Prince Imrahil the Fair

Whenever a creature you control leaves the battlefield, create a 1/1 white Soldier token. This converts all your combat deaths, sacrifice effects, and opponent removal into replacement bodies. Against board wipes, every creature you lose becomes a token on the way out. Imrahil ensures you always have blockers, always have fodder for sacrifice effects, and always have bodies to trigger Éowyn's death-based power buff.

Unbreakable Formation
Art by Clint Cearley

Unbreakable Formation

Pay three mana at instant speed and all creatures you control gain indestructible until end of turn. Pay the addendum cost if cast on your main phase and also give all your creatures +1/+1 counters and vigilance. This card protects your board from sweepers during attack, ambushes opponents who try to trade in combat, and if cast on your main phase before attacking, pumps your entire board and lets them block without tapping. It's one of the best combat tricks in a deck built around combat.

How to Play

Build a wide board of Humans and Warriors in the first three or four turns. Get Théoden in play and attack with as many creatures as possible, using Erkenbrand to draw into more threats. Attack with Éowyn once large instants and sorceries are in opponents' graveyards — free copies of removal, draw spells, or board wipes are consistently powerful.

Win with Shared Animosity making one combat completely lethal. Cast Unbreakable Formation as protection against sweepers. The deck wins fast — it's an aggressive strategy that kills the table through combat rather than grinding. Keep pressure on each opponent so no one stabilizes, then finish with one massive attack step.
