commander · Ranar the Ever-Watchful
Phantom Premonition (KHM).
An Azorius spirits and foretell deck led by Ranar the Ever-Watchful, exile cards from your hand via foretell, trigger spirit token creation, and build a flying army that overwhelms the table.
The Commanders
Phantom Premonition is an Azorius Commander deck built around the Kaldheim foretell mechanic and the spirits tribal theme. The core loop is simple: exile cards from your hand to foretell them, trigger Ranar, generate 1/1 flying spirit tokens, and bury opponents under a growing air force while your real threats wait safely in exile.
Ranar the Ever-Watchful is the engine that ties both themes together. He has flying and vigilance, costs {2}{W}{U}, and generates a 1/1 white Spirit token with flying whenever you foretell a card or any spell or ability exiles permanents from the battlefield. The first card you foretell each turn costs {2} less, which means foretelling cards is free ahead of time. Ranar rewards you for hiding answers in exile, punishes opponents who try to interact with your instants, and generates a board presence just by doing what the deck wants to do.
Cosima, God of the Voyage is the deck's most explosive value piece and alternate win path. She can exile herself and accumulate voyage counters each time you play a land while she's exiled, then return to your hand as a massive draw engine. In a foretell deck full of exile effects, Cosima generates absurd card advantage once the engine starts running.
Key Cards
Vega, the Watcher
The deck's second draw engine. Whenever you cast a spell from anywhere other than your hand, foretold cards included, Vega draws you a card. In a deck with 20+ foretell and flashback effects, Vega turns every foretold spell into a cantrip on top of its normal effect. Vega also synergizes with Cosima's return ability. Once Vega is on board, the deck's hand size advantage over opponents grows each turn without extra investment.
Spectral Deluge
The deck's signature board wipe. Spectral Deluge bounces all non-Spirit creatures your opponents control back to their hands and leaves your own spirits untouched. The foretell cost means you can exile it safely ahead of time, telegraph nothing, and cast it on your opponent's turn at instant speed when they overextend. This is the biggest structural advantage of the foretell mechanic: opponents play around threats they can't see, and this card punishes anyone who floods their board.
Cosmos Elixir
A life-gain and card draw artifact that scales with life total. At the beginning of each end step, you gain 2 life, and if your life total exceeds 30 you draw a card. In Commander, you start at 40 life, so you're drawing immediately. The Elixir keeps your hand full and offsets damage from early threats while you establish your air force. It's not flashy, but it's a persistent engine that lets the deck play long games it would otherwise lose.
Glorious Protector
One of Kaldheim's best new additions. Glorious Protector is a flash 3/4 angel with foretell. When it enters, you can exile any number of non-Angel creatures you control until it leaves. This works as instant-speed protection from board wipes. Flash Protector in response to a Wrath to phase out your spirit army, then get them all back. It also triggers Ranar, since it exiles permanents you control. One card protects your board, leaves a body behind, and makes a token on the way.
Brago, King Eternal
The flicker powerhouse of the deck. When Brago deals combat damage to a player, you exile any number of target nonland permanents you control, then return them to the battlefield. Every Brago attack triggers Ranar once (exiling and returning all those permanents counts). It resets enters-the-battlefield effects, resets summoning sickness on your creatures, and generates a Spirit token for the exile trigger. The combination of Brago's value engine and Ranar's token generation is one of the fastest ways to build an overwhelming air force.
How to Play
The first three turns are about establishing mana and getting Ranar into play as early as turn three. From there, every land drop and foretell activation should be accompanied by a Ranar token. Foretell your expensive spells on turns three and four to generate tokens while holding mana for counters and interaction. The mid game is about protecting Ranar and building a wide token board. The deck has counterspells and blink effects to keep him alive. Once you have eight or more spirit tokens with flying and a Spectral Deluge waiting in exile, start attacking in waves. Close games by keeping opponents' boards empty with asymmetric bounce effects while your aerial army does the rest.
