The Commanders

Omo, Queen of Vesuva
Omo, Queen of Vesuva · Art by the card's artist

Tricky Terrain is a Simic lands-matter deck from Modern Horizons 3. Omo, Queen of Vesuva builds around land duplication: you copy your best lands with Vesuva and Thespian's Stage effects for a big mana turn or a chain of land-based value. Add landfall payoffs like Avenger of Zendikar and Scute Swarm, and each new land drop snowballs into tokens and triggers that pile up fast.

Omo, Queen of Vesuva rewards playing lands and interacts with the land-duplication theme the deck is built around. She puts counters on lands, enabling Tron-style value with Cloudpost and similar lands, and generates incremental advantage from every land entering the battlefield. Against ramp-heavy pods, Omo's land interactions give the deck a unique angle that opponents don't have clean answers to.

Key Cards

Avenger of Zendikar

Avenger of Zendikar

The deck's most explosive landfall payoff. When Avenger of Zendikar enters, it creates a 0/1 Plant token for each land you control, usually seven to ten tokens by this point in the game. Then every land drop after that puts a +1/+1 counter on each Plant. With Omo repeatedly triggering land entries through copies and duplicates, your Plant army grows from 0/1s to 3/4s or larger in a single turn. A board of eight 4/5 Plant tokens is lethal within one or two combat steps.

Scute Swarm

Scute Swarm

Exponential token generation from land drops. Before City's Blessing (ten permanents), each land drop creates one more Scute Swarm. After City's Blessing, each land drop creates a copy of Scute Swarm itself. With eight lands in play and two more to drop, that's four Scute Swarm copies, and the next land doubles them to eight, then sixteen, then thirty-two. A single extra land drop with ten Scute Swarms becomes twenty. The deck reaches this exponential point faster than most pods can interact.

Vesuva

Vesuva

A land that enters as a copy of any land in play. Copy your best utility land: a Gaea's Cradle for mana, a Maze of Ith for defense, or a land that throws landfall value off its own enter trigger. Vesuva plus Thespian's Stage lets you copy the same land several times over a few turns. With Omo's interaction with land types and the deck's focus on exploiting powerful non-basic lands, Vesuva enables configurations that generate more mana or triggers than a normal land suite could provide.

Dryad of the Ilysian Grove

Dryad of the Ilysian Grove

Every land you control is every basic land type, and you can play an additional land each turn. This solves two problems at once. The extra land drop doubles your landfall triggers each turn: two land drops a turn means double the Avenger counters, double the Scute Swarm triggers, double the Omo activations. The basic land type fixing makes every non-basic land tap for any color too, which cleans up the mana in the blue-green build.

Ramunap Excavator

Ramunap Excavator

Play lands from your graveyard. Ramunap Excavator lets you replay land cards from your graveyard, so fetch lands, sacrificed lands, and milled lands all turn back into land drops. In a deck that ramps hard and sometimes sacrifices lands for value, Excavator recycles the land count and keeps landfall going turn after turn. It's the reason the deck doesn't run out of land drops in the mid-game when the engine is supposed to explode.

Tatyova, Benthic Druid

Tatyova, Benthic Druid

Draw a card and gain 1 life for every land that enters the battlefield under your control. In a deck generating three to four land entries per turn through Dryad of the Ilysian Grove and land copies, Tatyova draws three to four cards each turn cycle. This turns the land engine into your best source of card draw. Tatyova keeps you from running out of lands to play, since you're always drawing into more, which fuels more drops, which draws more cards. She's the piece that keeps the whole engine running on its own.

How to Play

This deck wants to ramp first and explode later. Turns one through four are about establishing mana rocks, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove for extra land drops, and Ramunap Excavator for land recursion. Omo comes out by turn four. Turn five, drop Tatyova and start drawing cards from every land entry.

The win condition arrives when Scute Swarm hits the exponential threshold or Avenger of Zendikar enters with ten or more lands. From that point, each land drop multiplies your board: Scute Swarms copy themselves into dozens, and Avenger Plants jump from 0/1 to 5/6 in one turn. Attack with a huge token army backed by landfall triggers. The deck can also generate infinite land drops with specific Cloudpost/Vesuva configurations for an insurmountable mana advantage that makes everything cost zero in practical terms.
