Mechanics

  • Devoid

A devoid card is colorless regardless of its mana cost. Twenty one cards in the set carry it, nearly all of them Eldrazi, which is what lets the five color Eldrazi deck function as a colorless deck wearing a rainbow mana base.

  • Annihilator

When a creature with annihilator attacks, the defending player sacrifices that many permanents. It is the oldest and bluntest Eldrazi payoff, and it is back here as the reason to ramp.

  • Energy counters

Energy is a private pool of counters that certain cards produce and others spend. The Jeskai deck uses it to convert artifacts and creature triggers into tokens and card draw.

  • Cascade

When you cast a spell with cascade, exile cards from the top of your library until you hit a cheaper nonland card, then cast it free. It rewards a curve built around a single expensive payoff.

  • Landfall

Landfall triggers whenever a land enters under your control. The Simic deck copies lands to double up on those triggers rather than just playing more of them.

The set

Modern Horizons 3 was designed to push cards straight into Modern without a standard detour, and the Commander decks inherited that power level. These are noticeably stronger out of the box than a typical seasonal precon.

Eldrazi are the anchor. The set gave the tribe a proper support package, and the five color deck plays like a ramp deck that eventually casts something the table cannot answer. Energy came back here as well, in a Jeskai artifact shell that spends counters as fast as it makes them.

Where to start

Eldrazi Incursion is the best value if you plan to play it as is. Tricky Terrain has the highest ceiling once you add real land tutors and a way to untap them.
