Mechanics

  • Investigate

Create a Clue token, an artifact you sacrifice for two mana to draw a card. The set treats Clues as both card draw and artifact count, so a lot of payoffs care how many you have sitting around.

  • Disguise

Cast a creature face down as a 2/2 with ward {2}, then turn it up later for its disguise cost. It is morph with a protection tax attached, so opponents cannot cheaply pick off your hidden threats.

  • Cloak

Put a card onto the battlefield face down as a 2/2 with ward {2}. If it is a creature card, it can be turned face up later for its mana cost. Cloak is how the set puts cards from anywhere into play sideways.

  • Suspect

A suspected creature has menace and cannot block. Handing it out to your own attackers pushes damage through, and giving it to an opponent removes a blocker.

  • Surveil

Look at the top card of your library and choose whether it goes to the graveyard. The Dimir deck runs on it, filling the yard while it sets up draws.

The set

Murders at Karlov Manor is a whodunit on Ravnica, and the Commander decks are built around the parts of that story you can actually hold: evidence, hidden identities and suspects. Investigate is everywhere. Clue tokens are the currency, and cards in these decks either make them, break them or count them.

The other half of the set is face-down creatures. Disguise and cloak both drop a 2/2 with ward {2} onto the battlefield, so a board of unknowns builds up while opponents guess which one is the payoff. Turning them face up mid combat is where most of the blowouts come from.

Where to start

Deep Clue Sea is the easiest to upgrade because Clues plug into any blue artifact shell. Blame Game is the most fun in a four player pod and the least effective in a duel.
