The Commander

Zada, Hedron Grinder
Zada, Hedron Grinder · Art by Chris Rallis

Goblin Storm is a Secret Lair Commander deck, so it arrives as a boxed hundred rather than as part of a set release. It is mono red and it has exactly one idea, which it commits to completely.

Zada, Hedron Grinder copies any instant or sorcery that targets only a single creature you control, once for each other creature you control, with each copy targeting a different one. Cast a one mana cantrip on Zada with six goblins out and you draw seven cards. The card that costs one mana and does nothing in most decks is the card this deck is built to cast.

The rest of the ninety-nine exists to make that turn happen: goblins that arrive several at a time, rituals to pay for the spell, and a couple of ways to finish once the board is wide.

Key Cards

Expedite

One mana, target creature gains haste, draw a card. On its own it is filler. Aimed at Zada with a board of goblins it draws a card for every creature you control and hastes them all, which matters when half of them entered this turn. Crimson Wisps and Renegade Tactics do the same job at the same price, and the deck runs all three.

Four mana for two goblins is a bad rate. Four mana after three other spells is ten goblins, and ten goblins is what Zada wants. Storm rewards the same sequencing the commander does, which is why Grapeshot sits next to it as the other storm payoff: cheap spells first, then the card that counts them.

Krenko, Mob Boss

Krenko, Mob Boss

Tap to double your goblin count. Krenko is the fastest way from four creatures to eight, and eight creatures is the difference between a cantrip drawing four cards and drawing nine. He is also the card most likely to eat the removal spell that was meant for Zada, which suits this deck fine.

How It Plays

Flood the board, then find Zada. Skirk Prospector and Brightstone Ritual turn spare goblins into the mana for the turn you go off, and Skullclamp converts the ones that die into more cards. Conspicuous Snoop and Pashalik Mons pay you for having a pile of small red bodies around, and Broadside Bombardiers gives you a way to throw them at somebody's face.

The weakness is the obvious one. The deck does very little without a board, and Zada is a four mana 3/3 that does nothing the turn she lands, so a well timed sweeper undoes several turns of work and leaves you holding cantrips. Roaming Throne is the sneaky upgrade already in the box, doubling triggers on your goblins. The first cards to add are protection for the commander and a second answer to a wrath.
