commander · Felothar the Steadfast
Abzan Armor (TDC).
An Abzan toughness-matters deck led by Felothar the Steadfast, turn your defenders into attackers with Assault Formation, ramp with walls, and swing for lethal with creatures that tower in toughness.
The Commanders
Abzan Armor is a Tarkir: Dragonstorm deck built around one of Magic's most satisfying reversals: your walls are your win condition. The deck floods the board with high-toughness defenders, taps them for mana, then flips the script and swings for huge damage with creatures your opponents wrote off as blockers. The defense is the offense.
Felothar the Steadfast is both the engine and the threat. He rewards you for building a board of high-toughness creatures, then pumps them into real attackers. He wants you going wide with walls and treefolk, and the more defenders you stack, the harder each swing lands.
Betor, Kin to All is the flexible alternative. Betor works across creature types and leans on toughness-based effects rather than pure beatdown. When a pod wants you to have resilience and tribal reach instead of raw toughness damage, swap to Betor.
Key Cards
Assault Formation
This enchantment is the reason the deck can win through combat. It lets each creature you control assign combat damage equal to its toughness instead of power. A 0/6 wall hits for 6. A 0/8 Axebane Guardian hits for 8. Combine it with Felothar pumping the whole board and you're swinging with 8/8s and 10/10s that cost three mana to deploy. Find this early and protect it.
Axebane Guardian
Defender ramp on legs. Axebane taps for one mana of any color per Defender you control: three walls gives three mana, five walls gives five. It's one of the best mana engines in the format for this strategy. Get it down early, stack more Defenders, and you'll be casting your whole hand by turn five. It also swings for its toughness once Assault Formation is online.
Overgrown Battlement
The green counterpart to Axebane Guardian. Overgrown Battlement taps to produce green mana equal to your number of Defenders. With both Axebane and Battlement on the field, your wall army doubles as a mana battery that can float obscene amounts of mana for your big threats. This is the card that lets you slam Seedborn Muse, Shalai, and Felothar all in the same turn.
Seedborn Muse
Seedborn Muse untaps all your permanents on each other player's untap step. In a deck that generates mana from tapping Defenders, this means your wall army is always ready to produce again. You generate mana on every player's turn, which lets you flash in threats, activate abilities, and hold up interaction while continuing to advance your board. Against slower decks, Seedborn Muse is close to unbeatable.
Shalai, Voice of Plenty
Shalai gives your creatures and planeswalkers hexproof, which walls off your whole board from targeted removal. Against decks leaning on single-target answers, she shuts the plan down. Her activated ability pumps the team with +1/+1 counters when you have spare mana, and with Axebane and Battlement online you will have spare mana. Shalai plus Felothar builds a board that's very hard to interact with.
Treefolk Harbinger
A one-mana tutor that fetches any Treefolk or Forest from your library. The deck runs treefolk that double as walls, creatures with huge toughness that hit hard under Assault Formation. Harbinger finds the exact piece you need: Axebane for ramp, a Forest for mana, or a big treefolk beater to close. Its 0/3 body also adds to your Defender count right away.
How to Play
The first two turns are setup: land a one- or two-mana wall and dig for Assault Formation or Axebane Guardian. By turn three you should have a few Defenders and be making extra mana. Turns four through six are for your payoffs, Felothar, Shalai, and Seedborn Muse, while you keep adding walls that also tap for mana. Once Assault Formation is active and you have five or more Defenders, swing with everything. Creatures your opponents ignored suddenly hit for double digits. The deck goldfishes fast with Formation and stalls without it, so dig for it hard in the early turns.
