The Commanders

Mardu Surge is a Tarkir: Dragonstorm deck built for aggressive token generation and combat trigger stacking. You attack early, make tokens off those attacks, sacrifice them for drain, and win before opponents stabilize. The plan is to hit fast and make every blocker they play cost them life.

Zurgo Stormrender is the engine. He triggers off attacks to make tokens and hand you extra combat phases or damage multipliers, and the whole thing snowballs with each swing. He rewards the token-heavy aggression the deck wants, and he punishes anyone who can't keep pace with the tokens.

Neriv, Crackling Vanguard is the more methodical alternative. Neriv builds combat value along a different line and gives the deck's sacrifice payoffs more chances to fire. Swap to Neriv against pods that will answer Zurgo quickly.

Key Cards

Isshin, Two Heavens as One
Art by Ryan Pancoast

Isshin, Two Heavens as One

Isshin doubles every triggered ability that fires when a creature attacks. Hero of Bladehold makes twice the tokens. Zurgo Stormrender fires twice. Thalisse doubles her trigger count. Every attacking creature in the deck gets twice as good the moment Isshin lands. Opponents have to answer him right away, or the token count and drain triggers pile up until the game ends on the spot.

Hero of Bladehold

Hero of Bladehold

Hero of Bladehold makes two 1/1 Soldier tokens and gives them +1/+0 and haste whenever she attacks. A 3/4 that swings and produces two 2/1 hasted tokens is already great. With Isshin in play she makes four 2/1 hasted tokens per attack. That is twelve power of hasted attackers hitting the board off one creature, every turn. She is one of the fastest clocks in the format and the scariest thing you can draw in the first five turns.

Thalisse, Reverent Medium

Thalisse, Reverent Medium

At the end of your turn, Thalisse makes Spirit tokens equal to the number of tokens you made on your previous turn. In a deck that pumps out four to eight tokens every combat, she doubles your board every single turn. The token count compounds fast, and with Bastion of Remembrance out, every new token drains each opponent for one life as it enters. Thalisse turns that runaway token growth lethal within two or three turns.

Bastion of Remembrance

This is the drain engine that makes tokens lethal without ever attacking. Bastion drains each opponent for one life whenever a creature you control dies. In a deck that sacrifices tokens constantly for Skullclamp draws and other effects, every sacrifice becomes a drain trigger. When Thalisse makes ten Spirits at end of turn and you feed them straight into a Skullclamp chain, Bastion hits the table for ten life per opponent. The life loss stacks up faster than players expect.

Skullclamp
Art by Igor Krstic

Skullclamp

The best card draw in any token deck. Equip Skullclamp to a 1/1 and it dies on the spot, drawing you two cards. In a deck that spits out dozens of 1/1 tokens, that is close to unlimited draw: any time you have two mana open, spare tokens turn into cards. Clamp them before a board wipe to dig for answers, or chain it in your main phase to refill after combat.

How to Play

Come out of the gates swinging. Get Hero of Bladehold or another aggressive token maker down by turn three and start stacking tokens right away. After Zurgo, your top priority is finding Isshin, because doubling your attack triggers turns a fast deck into an avalanche. Thalisse and Bastion of Remembrance turn your token surplus into a drain clock that wins even against a stalled board. Skullclamp keeps your hand full through the mid-game. If opponents stabilize, lean on the Bastion plan: sacrifice tokens two cards at a time and let the life loss do the work.
