Mechanics

  • Role tokens

Roles are Aura tokens you attach to a creature, each with a small buff, and a creature can only carry one at a time. The Selesnya deck makes them constantly, so every enchantress trigger comes with a body getting bigger.

  • Adventure

An adventure card can be cast as a spell first, then exiled and cast later as a creature. Two cards in one slot, which is the mechanic Eldraine is known for.

  • Constellation

Constellation triggers whenever an enchantment enters under your control. With Roles counting as enchantments, it fires more often here than in most enchantment decks.

  • Faeries

The Dimir deck is a straight Faerie typal build. Flash and flying do the work, and the deck plays as a tempo deck rather than a controlling one.

The set

Wilds of Eldraine went back to fairy tales, and the two Commander decks pick the two most obvious threads: the Faeries and the enchanted forest.

Role tokens are the mechanical hook. They are small Auras that stack up over a game, and because they are enchantments they turn on constellation and enchantress effects. That makes the Selesnya deck considerably more than an Aura deck with extra steps. The one Role per creature rule also protects you from the classic Aura disaster, since you never end up with four cards stapled to one body waiting for a removal spell.

The Dimir deck takes the other Eldraine tradition, the scheming Faeries. It plays like a tempo deck: flash creatures, cheap card draw, and enough interaction to keep the table honest while the fliers get there.

Where to start

Virtue and Valor is the stronger of the two and upgrades naturally into a full enchantress deck. Fae Dominion needs a few more cheap interaction pieces to hold up its tempo plan.
