commander · Willowdusk, Essence Seer
Witherbloom Witchcraft (C21).
A Golgari lifegain and +1/+1 counters deck led by Willowdusk, Essence Seer — gain life aggressively, convert that life gain into enormous +1/+1 counter payoffs, and close the game with a single unstoppable creature.
The Commanders
Witherbloom Witchcraft is a Golgari Commander deck built around the lifegain and sacrifice themes of Witherbloom College. The loop is about scale: gain significant life, use Willowdusk to convert life gained into a mountain of +1/+1 counters on one creature, and swing for lethal with a single enormous attacker that opponents cannot realistically block or kill.
Willowdusk, Essence Seer costs {1}{B}{G} and is a 3/3 Dryad Druid. For {1} and tapping, you choose another target creature and put a number of +1/+1 counters on it equal to the amount of life you gained this turn or the amount of life you lost this turn, whichever is greater. The key word is "whichever is greater" — this means both gaining and losing large amounts of life loads counters equally. With 20 life gained or lost in a turn, that creature gets 20 counters instantly. The deck's lifegain package makes 20+ life in a single turn achievable by turn five or six.
Gyome, Master Chef is the food-based alternative. Gyome creates Food tokens whenever nontoken creatures enter, and creatures you sacrifice Food tokens for gain menace until end of turn. In a slower, more resilient game plan, Gyome generates a steady stream of food that fuels lifegain for Willowdusk activations.
Key Cards
Trudge Garden
Token generation that triggers every time you gain four or more life in one shot. Whenever you gain four or more life, pay {1}{G}{B} to create a 4/4 Fungus Beast token. In a deck constantly gaining life in large chunks — from lifelink, from drain effects, from Gyome's food — Trudge Garden passively builds an army. A single turn where you gain 12 life can create three 4/4s for minimal investment. Each token also serves as sacrifice fuel for Willowdusk setups or life payment for Witherbloom's cost-reduction effects.
Blight Mound
Passive pest generation on deaths. Whenever a nontoken creature you control dies, create a 1/1 Pest token with lifelink. Those Pests feed Willowdusk by generating life when they attack, and they create sacrifice fodder for Gyome's food-making. Blight Mound also punishes board wipes — opponents board wipe your creatures, and you create a wave of lifelinkers in return. The life those Pests generate when swinging can be immediately funneled into a Willowdusk activation to put 20 counters on another creature the same turn.
Witherbloom Apprentice
Incremental draining from magecraft. Whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery, you gain 1 life and each opponent loses 1 life. In a multiplayer game, each spell effectively deals 3 damage (1 to each of three opponents) and gains you 1 life. Over the course of a full game, Witherbloom Apprentice drains 10 to 20 life from each opponent through normal gameplay. The life you gain fuels Willowdusk's counter distribution, making the Apprentice valuable both as a finisher and as a setup piece.
Tenured Inkcaster
Counter-to-drain conversion engine. Whenever a creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it attacks, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life. In a deck that regularly puts 15 or 20 counters on a single creature, Tenured Inkcaster drains for 15+ life total each attack — before combat damage. That life gain immediately fuels another Willowdusk activation on the same turn, creating a positive feedback loop. The creature doesn't need to deal combat damage, just attack, so even flying blockers don't stop the drain.
How to Play
Focus the first four turns on establishing mana and landing Willowdusk by turn three. Look for lifegain sources in the opening — Gyome's food tokens, Blight Mound Pests, and lifelink creatures all generate the numbers Willowdusk needs. The target is 15 to 20 life gained in a single turn, which Willowdusk converts to 15+ counters on your best creature. Protect that creature with regeneration or hexproof effects. The win condition is swinging with a 20/20 or bigger creature that opponents can't block. Against interaction-heavy pods, run the game long and use Tenured Inkcaster's drain to close without needing the combat step.
