Mechanics

  • Energy counters

Energy is a pool of counters you keep between turns and spend on card effects. Aetherdrift brought it back at scale, and the Temur deck banks it off artifacts before cashing it in for copies and extra combats.

  • Exhaust

An exhaust ability can be activated only once per game. It lets a creature carry a large one time effect without becoming a repeatable engine, so the payoff is bigger than a normal activated ability.

  • Vehicles and crew

Vehicles are artifacts that become creatures when you tap other creatures with enough total power to crew them. Fitting for a racing set, and they dodge sorcery speed removal while parked.

The set

Aetherdrift is a race across planes, so the set is full of Vehicles, speed and energy. The two Commander decks split those ideas: one takes the artifact and energy side, the other goes tribal with Zombies.

Energy is the mechanic that matters most in the precons. It shows up on around thirty cards across the two decks and gives the Temur build a second resource to manage alongside mana. Nobody can interact with your energy pool, so the deck is really playing a private economy that opponents can only disrupt by killing the creatures that fill it.

Exhaust appears in smaller doses as a one shot payoff. Because each exhaust ability can be used only once per game, the effects are larger than a normal activated ability would be, which fits a set about pushing an engine past its limits.

The Esper deck sits outside all of that. Zombies, discard and recursion have nothing to do with racing, and the deck is better for it: it gives the product a second box that plays a well understood archetype rather than two decks fighting over the same resource.

Where to start

Living Energy is the more interesting build and the harder one to pilot. Eternal Might is the more reliable of the two and needs fewer changes to hold its own at a table.
