Mechanics

  • Wedge color identities

Each deck is a wedge, a color plus its two enemies. The 2011 decks covered the shards, so this batch filled in the rest and gave several of those color combinations their first real support.

  • Tempting offer

Tempting offer effects give you something, then let each opponent copy the effect for themselves if they choose. Five of them appear here, and they turn every cast into a table negotiation.

  • Landfall

Landfall triggers when a land enters, and it appears across the batch as the ramp payoff.

  • Split second

A spell with split second cannot be responded to. Two cards in the set carry it, and they exist to end an argument on the stack.

The set

Commander 2013 completed the color combination map. Five wedge decks, each covering a three color identity that had been underserved, and several commanders that are still played more than a decade later.

Two cards from this release changed things. Oloro, Ageless Ascetic gains life from the command zone whether you cast him or not, which was the first taste of what would later be called eminence. True-Name Nemesis was printed here too and immediately became a Legacy staple, which made this the most expensive Commander product of its era.

The decks are slow and the mana bases are dated. The commanders are the reason to look.

Where to start

Power Hungry is the most straightforward and still fun. Evasive Maneuvers is the one experienced players fear, since Derevi never really stays dead.
