Doctor's companion
A card with doctor's companion can be your second commander if your other commander is a Doctor. It is partner, restricted to the right pairing, and it is on more than a hundred cards across the set.
Suspend and time counters
Suspend exiles a card with time counters and casts it free once they run out. Doctor Who leans on it harder than any set before, and the Jeskai deck exists to remove those counters early.
Paradox
Paradox abilities check whether a permanent entered under your control from anywhere other than your hand this turn. Blink, suspend and free casts all switch it on.
Villainous choice
Villainous choice gives each opponent a choice between two bad outcomes. It appears throughout the set and lets the villain deck squeeze the table without targeting anything.
The set
Doctor Who is built around commander pairs. Nearly every deck runs a Doctor plus a companion, and doctor's companion is what makes that legal. It is the most commander specific mechanic Wizards has printed, and it gives each deck two personalities to switch between.
Time is the other theme. Suspend and time counters show up across hundreds of cards, and the Jeskai deck is built to speed them up rather than wait them out.
Suspend is normally a drawback dressed as a discount. Timey-Wimey inverts that by adding effects that remove time counters early, so a spell you exiled two turns ago arrives on your terms. It is one of the rare precons whose whole plan depends on a mechanic almost nobody else builds around.
Villainous choice is the design that makes the villain deck work at a four player table. Giving each opponent a decision between two bad outcomes gets value from everyone at once without picking a fight with a specific player, which is exactly what a multiplayer deck wants. It also generates some of the most interesting table talk in any recent set.
Where to start
Timey-Wimey is the most distinctive deck of the four and the one that plays least like anything else in the format. Masters of Evil is the meanest.
