Maestros Massacre is a Grixis Commander deck themed around the Maestros crime family of New Capenna, a gang of elite assassins and art forgers. The mechanical identity is "casualty": pay the casualty cost by sacrificing a creature to copy an instant or sorcery spell. Anhelo pushes this further by giving the first instant or sorcery you cast each turn casualty 2 for free. Every turn, sacrifice one creature, copy your best spell.

Anhelo, the Painter has deathtouch and a passive ability: the first instant or sorcery you cast each turn has casualty 2. Pay casualty 2 by sacrificing a creature with power two or greater to copy that spell. You don't need spells with casualty printed on them, since Anhelo gives it to any instant or sorcery. Cast Cyclonic Rift? Copy it for free by sacrificing a token. Cast a board wipe? Two board wipes for one card. The copy effect scales with spell quality.

Parnesse, the Subtle Brush is the politics alternative. She's a legendary Human Wizard who copies spells: whenever a player copies an instant or sorcery spell, you may copy it too. You draw a card when she copies a spell this way. In a deck that copies spells constantly through Anhelo and casualty effects, Parnesse copies every copy trigger and draws a card each time. Against pods where opponents also run copy effects, Parnesse gets even more free copies.

Key Cards

Extravagant Replication
Art by Aurore Folny

Extravagant Replication

A New Capenna exclusive enchantment. At the beginning of your upkeep, copy target artifact or creature you control. Tokens don't make new copies, only original permanents do. Each upkeep, clone your most powerful permanent. Clone Anhelo for two copies of his ability. Clone a token generator and double your output every turn. This card compounds the deck's power exponentially if it resolves and remains on the battlefield for two or three turns.

Maestros Confluence
Art by Ignacio Bazán Lazcano

Maestros Confluence

A five-mana instant that lets you choose three options from: put a +1/+1 counter on a creature, make a player discard a card, or deal three damage to a target. You can repeat options. With Anhelo's casualty, copy this and get six total mode selections for five mana and one sacrificed creature. Maestros Confluence gives you removal, disruption, and damage in one card, and the copy doubles every choice.

Lord Xander, the Collector
Art by Magali Villeneuve

Lord Xander, the Collector

A seven-mana legendary Vampire Demon Warlock. When he enters, target opponent discards half their hand. When he attacks, target opponent mills half their library. When he dies, target opponent sacrifices half their permanents. Each ability strips an opponent of half of something, so entering, attacking, and dying all wreck a hand or board. With Anhelo sacrificing creatures for casualty, Lord Xander dies to fire his death trigger while the sacrifice also fuels a spell copy.

Spark Double
Art by Kieran Yanner

Spark Double

Copies any creature or planeswalker you control, enters with an extra counter, and isn't legendary, so both copies coexist. Copy Anhelo to create two instances of his casualty-granting ability. Copy Parnesse for double the copy triggers. Copy Lord Xander before sacrificing the original to casualty, and both enter and both die, so both death triggers fire. Spark Double's value in this deck scales with whatever your strongest permanent is at any given moment.

Kess, Dissident Mage
Art by Magali Villeneuve

Kess, Dissident Mage

Flying, haste, and a static ability: once per turn, you may cast an instant or sorcery card from your graveyard. That card is exiled on resolution. Kess turns your graveyard into a second hand of instants and sorceries. Every spell Anhelo copied is now available once through Kess. Combine with Anhelo's casualty to copy those recurred spells again. Kess sustains the spell engine through the late game when your hand runs dry.

How to Play

Build a board of sacrifice fodder early: tokens from cantrips, treasure tokens, and utility creatures all serve as fuel for Anhelo's casualty. Deploy Anhelo turn three or four, then start sacrificing a creature each turn to copy your best spell. Focus on copying high-impact spells: board wipes, large draw spells, and removal become twice as efficient.

Win through doubled board wipes clearing opponents repeatedly, or through Kess recurring powerful spells from the graveyard and copying them again with Anhelo. Lord Xander's disruption, halving hands, libraries, and permanents, puts opponents in holes they cannot climb out of. The deck rewards knowing which spell to copy each turn and keeping sacrifice fodder on hand to fuel Anhelo's engine.
